#1cam_banksAug 04, 2003 7:55:03 | Hey folks, I'm starting my Dragonlance campaign up this fall, and my group uses miniatures and a battlemat for running combats. This means we're in the market for some new minis, and so my question to you is whether you can recommend any particular company or series of miniatures for this? So far, I've learned that Ral Partha had a series of Dragonlance miniatures back in the late 80's, which are no longer available. I've scoured Reaper Miniature's website looking for some likely candidates, but nothing more than a few knights and so on. The biggest problems are draconians, minotaurs, and kender. I could use lizardmen for draconians, and halflings for kender, but as we all know that's not quite accurate. Some companies make minotaurs, but they're usually monsters and not characters. Any ideas? Cheers, Cam |
#2kipper_snifferdoo_02Aug 04, 2003 8:01:54 | Well at GenCon I happened upon a new company called Adiken and purchased three of their miniatures. They have knights and and orc (which could be goblin), an ogre with a battle axe, and a nasty looking half-troll (which could probably pass for a titan, heh) and of corse the obligatory scantily clad female warriors, There are only a few figs right now but I like the designs. www.adiken.com |
#3cam_banksAug 04, 2003 8:40:51 | Oh, those are the guys with the R-Rated amazons and lust demon minis. I saw a flyer of theirs in the hotel room at one point while we were there. The knights are good. I'm tempted to add a whole new knightly order of women just to use those Queen's Guards. Hmm. Maybe that's what the Widows of Ansalon will end up being. That was my wife's idea, something Margaret ended up mentioning at the reception. After the War of Souls, there were undoubtedly a lot of widows left over from all the men who fought and died. So, they take up arms and armor and have to defend their homes from brigands and raiders and goblins, etc. That'd work with those minis pretty well. Cheers, Cam |

#5kipper_snifferdoo_02Aug 04, 2003 9:49:34 | Yup, I found this at Gamingreport.com D&D Miniatures Dragoneye Expansion Pack The Dragoneye Expansion Pack contains a randomized selection of figures designed to expand any collection of D&D miniatures. The Dragoneye set is the first set of new miniatures since the initial product line launch. The randomized figures are drawn not only from the core rulebooks but from other D&D products released around the same time such as Draconomicon, Complete Warrior and the Dragonlance campaign setting. This set also features multiple dragon figures of varying size. http://www.gamingreport.com/article.php?sid=7666 |
#6cam_banksAug 04, 2003 10:27:11 | Some of the comments posted at the end of that link echo my own reservation about the new D&D miniatures. I don't want to buy a box of random models and hope the one I want is in there. It may work well for collectible gaminglike Mage Knight and HeroClix, but for plain old D&D campaigns it's going to be something of a headache. I may get a kender, or I may not... Cheers, Cam |
#7talinthasAug 04, 2003 11:37:00 | we should try to get SP to farm out to fiery dragon press or whatever and get some of those rocking counters. They arent as cool as minis, but easier to store and stuff... |
#8brimstoneAug 04, 2003 12:28:56 | Oi vey! Not more painting. LOL! I tried to get my hands on the complete set of villians (I'm missing about half of them)...but I lost the eBay bid. And I've never seen the Draconian set on eBay. I've had to use different Gargoyles from Hero's Quest and painted them different colors to get draconians. It certainly would be nice to be able to get some Dracs and kender. (since most everything else can be substituted for D&D minis) |
#9GranakrsAug 04, 2003 13:03:49 | Originally posted by Brimstone Heh. That's too bad. IF i see another draconian set at any game store, I'll remember to contact you. Personally, I'm miffed about that random mini idea. I've had enough problems with the SAGA fate deck cards and the Random mini-adventures that were in there. Not many people knew that there were four minis. Not many people knew that distribution of the cards were regional, i.e Western US got a certain mini and all of Southeast US got a different mini. And I just don't like the idea that i'm going to be buying a product and i don't know if i'm going to get what i get. I hope that the they list what DL mini's are produced while we hunt for them. #12brimstoneAug 04, 2003 13:29:54 | Originally posted by Granakrs Sounds good, I'd appreciate that, Weldon. Thanks! Originally posted by Granakrs Maybe they'll be in clear plastic containers. Or, maybe the game store owner will let you open the box first to see what's in there. It's not completely unheard of. Originally posted by Talinthas :P |

#14brimstoneAug 04, 2003 13:37:17 | Originally posted by talinthas It's not like it's that hard to mail something from the west coast to Houston. heh heh Well...if you get them...you'd better paint them.:fight!: |
#15GranakrsAug 04, 2003 14:20:30 | Originally posted by Brimstone That's what is going to exactly happen. :-) Fortunately, I'm one of those guys who hangs out often enough to know store owners and staff, so I can actually ask and they will say sure. It also helps that I upsell stuff, like the DLCS (and other stuff) to people. Still, as others have explained to me, their own gaming stores won't let them do that. TsK Tsk. Granak |
#16zombiegleemaxAug 04, 2003 15:18:28 | Yeah, the fact that the minis are randomly assorted is the only real deterrant for me. I don't want to buy 6-10 packs and end up with 15 orcs. That said, however, I'm sure that as with any collectible randomly assorted mini line, your FLGS will allow you to purchase them independently, as they'll likely have cases full of them. Unfortunately, this is also where the "collectible" aspect comes into play and the minimum asking price for that "perfect draconian" is $10. |
#17zombiegleemaxAug 04, 2003 23:55:26 | Somehow I managed to get my hands on one of the original sets of DL mini's several years ago. They are unpainted and still in the original box. It contains 6 characters, but I can't remember which 6 I have. I have them stored away with my DL comics, D&D trading cards and my DL graphic novels. Someday I hope to have enough room to showcase my collection. Until then it will have to stay boxed up. I would love to get any new DL mini's coming out.... but I definitely don't want to buy them in a random collection. I would love to see the DL Mini's boxed by themselves in distict sets for collectors. ~Khrystyne |
#18ferratusAug 05, 2003 3:23:24 | I used to use minatures, but the chore of glueing them together and painting their tiny faces with teeny brushes slowly drove me mad. I haven't quite completely recovered. I still have nightmares about trying to make the eyes. The horror... the horror... I myself use paper tokens these days. A nice little square of cardboard of the appropriate size, with the appropriate picture on it. No stress, no fuss, no muss. Also, much, much cheaper. I may buy the cheap plastic minatures that WotC is selling this fall though. |
#19cam_banksAug 05, 2003 6:46:38 | Originally posted by ferratus I actually use a combination of minis and tokens. PC heroes and major NPC bad guys always get a model, but legions of goblins, kobolds, minions or guards don't unless we happen to have enough minis around. Usually, we get colored glass stones (the kind folks use for CCGs like Magic as counters) of different colors. During one story arc, the Red Code elves who made up the bulk of the opposition to the player characters were represented by red stones. Easy enough to spot on the mat and easy enough to remove and "add up" for those players keeping score. Cheers, Cam |
