#1zombiegleemaxAug 07, 2003 16:33:44 | A previous thread on this board got me thinking about the role of a Paladin in DL. I read many people's ideas, and agreed with them. However, I also read on another thread that to advance from the Knight of the Crown PrC to Knight of the Sword PrC, the character would have to be able to cast divine spells. Now from that, I would discern that a few levels of cleric is needed to become a Knight of the Sword. But I have always felt that this didn't keep with, at least my, vision of the Solmnic Knights. I was pondering that this evening when it came to me. I had found a role for the Paladin in DL. I feel that the Paladin fits in perfectly as a Squire of the Crown. I think it fits because a Paladin must advance in levels before gaining access to spells, thus explaining why the Order of the Crown doesn't have access to spells and the Order of the Sword does. Some minor tweeking of the class would need to be done with v3.5 rules, the only thing being that the Paladin's Mount doesn't need to come from the celestial plane. Perhaps instead, the Paladin need only find an animal (usually a warhorse) and develop a connection with it. I figured that this way Paladins still play a large enough role in DL to not be rare and actually have a place in the setting. What do you all think? |

The fact that they're a good warrior type combined with divine spellcasting ability makes them ideal. The requirement for a Sword Knight to be able to cast 1st-level divine spells is there to account not only for clerics and paladins, but for mystics as well. This allows for Sword Knights during times of gods, and times of mysticism. |

It has been a while since I read the original series but I can't recall a sword or crown knight ever casting divine magic. Did Derek Crownguard? I just can't recall them ever casting spells (Perhaps in the Legend of Huma?). Did they cast spells at all? Would appreciate an example Arandur |

#5zombiegleemaxAug 07, 2003 17:31:06 | Yeah I kind of was blocking that novel out of the psyche (they killed one of my favourite characters -Steel). I guess it just doesn't pay to have the family name of Brightblade does it? But at least it is an example, thanks Arandur |

Course, if you are a Rose, you'd think you would be able to use your previously gained Sword abils, wouldn't you? Now, with the separate PrCs, I guess you will be able to. |
#7frojasAug 10, 2003 8:18:39 | If you are KoS are you required to take the appropriate PrC? Or is the PrC something that becomes available to you once you pass the tests and become a knight but is optional. |
#8cam_banksAug 10, 2003 8:26:46 | Originally posted by frojas Nope. You can play a 15th level fighter who just hasn't had the level of commitment and discipline to gain the benefits of the Knight PrCs yet is still a knight of Solamnia. He'd be losing out on a lot, though. Cheers, Cam |
