#1iltharanosAug 08, 2003 1:34:03 | At last at last, let there be Dragonlance! I can't tell you how much it pleases me that Dragonlance for D&D is but a week or two away from my hands. Perhaps because my first exposure to "fantasy" was through the Dragonlance novels, I can't help but associate elves with the Qualinesti, dwarves with Thorbardin, knights with Solamnia and troublemakers with Kender. There have been a lot of good campaigns since 3rd edition appeared some 3 years ago ... and I've even played in some, but I'm sure everyone here will agree that Dragonlance beats them ALL. The 3 year wait almost makes me forget how disappointed I was with WotC when they first announced in 2000 that Dragonlance would not be supported for 3rd edition ... almost. Speaking of obsessions, I believe I've got almost every Dragonlance novel out there (with the exception of the Warriors series and about half a dozen of the Fifth Age novels). Can anybody top that? |
#2talinthasAug 08, 2003 2:07:18 | i have every dragonlance novel in english, about 40 foreign editions, lots of cover reprints and new art and new design editions, all of the role playing product save about 4 modules and 2 saga boxes, limited edition art prints from elmore and lockwood, the italian mini modules, a DLA autographed by everyone, a bunch of signed books (like 30), signed DLCS and AoM, and a sketch book full of raistlin drawings done by every artist i could find at gen con, including elmore, lockwood, kovalic, aaron williams, scott kurtz, and others. Yeah, i think i can top that :D ;) |
#3iltharanosAug 08, 2003 2:13:46 | Ahh, but have you read all those novels? :D Damn, I'll have to downgrade my Dragonlance obsession to mild after having read your post! |
#4zombiegleemaxAug 08, 2003 3:10:39 | Talinthas do you have a scanner? It would be cool to see those Raistlin sketches. |
#5brimstoneAug 08, 2003 11:02:35 | Well...now I don't think I have as much as Tal, there...I do own every Dragonlance novel (several of them I own more than one edition of)...I've read them all, except for some of the latest ones (Warrior's Journey, City of the Lost, The Lioness, and Conundrum). Then...let's see...I own every 5th Age gaming product and every 2nd Edition AD&D DL gaming product and most of the 1st Edition AD&D DL gaming products. And the only two v3.5 D&D books so far. One Dragonlance board game (working on getting Magestones, as well) Two choose your own adventure type DL books...6 nintendo/computer games (Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, Dark Queen of Krynn, Heroes of the Lance, Dragonstrike, and The Shadow Sorcerer). I was never able to find Dragons of Flame unfortunately. Something close to 15 actual Dragonlance miniatures...and another...I don't know...40 or so modified plastic minis to fit Dragonlance. So...while my collection is no where near as expansive as some's (Tal, Weldon, and Richard all come to mind), I have spent my fair share of life savings on DL. heh heh EDIT: Oh...and I spent about $60 one weekend making my own Staff of Magius, and I am currently hunting of a hilt maker who can create the hilt and pommel of the Brightblade accurately (I've already found the blade and someone who can engrave the runes). |
#6zombiegleemaxAug 08, 2003 12:04:47 | I know I don't have the biggest collection.... but I'm proud of what I have. I have every novel in the series with the exception of the newest releases (no bookstore close so I make a road trip every few weeks) and I have read every one that I have, some of them many times. Many copies of several of the books. A few signed hardbacks, including the signatures from Weis, Hickman, Knaak and Chris Coyle on their respective books. My copy of The Art of the Dragonlance Saga is signed by Elmore, Easley and Parkinson. I have an autographed print of Elmore's Companions of the Lance A few of the gaming modules (never used) most of the graphic novels and several of the comic books. I have some of the miniatures and several of the calendars (some still in plastic where I bought them on E-Bay from Jean Rabe). My favorite piece of my collection will always be my tattoo of Raistlin's face on my right shoulder blade. I've had it for more than 10 years and it still looks as good as the day I got it! Larry Elmore loved it so at least I got a thumbs up from him. Still working on the collection and I probably won't stop until I get everything I possibly can. OH.... and Brim.... I understand about the life savings, I just try not to think about how much money I have spent on my obsession! ~Khrystyne |
#7talinthasAug 08, 2003 12:38:13 | i've read every product i own, even the foreign ones (with the help of dictionaries and my own knowledge of languages...though the chinese chronicals were too daunting for me ;) ) Oh and i have the video games, the board games, calanders, and graphic novels. Soon i will have the old comic series as well... But my print is the print of raist and crysania, signed by elmore at the con. And i'm working on getting that sketch book scanned in, but i keep forgetting =) |
#8brimstoneAug 08, 2003 13:16:54 | Originally posted by talinthas Do you have Dragons of Flame, Tal? How does that play? Pretty much like Heroes of the Lance? Or did they update it? Just curious. The Shadow Sorcerer (based off of DL3) was COMPLETELY different in how it plays. Pretty nuts. Oh...and I forgot about the graphic novels (have all but #5) and 4 calendars (not sure how many I am missing), and the old comic books except for 1-...6? I have them from the "Arena of Istar" and on up. But I don't remember what issue the first one of that series is...I think it's 7 or so. Unfortunately I don't have any prints of anything. But I do have all the Arts books, Leaves books, and the History book, too. I've thought about getting some prints, though, from Larry's site (Matt's too). What I would REALLY love a print of is Clyde Caldwells cover of Dragons of Triumph. That would be so slick. |
#9talinthasAug 08, 2003 13:26:06 | I have it, but i havent played it, since i dont have the means to =) |
#10zombiegleemaxAug 08, 2003 13:33:59 | Originally posted by talinthas How the heck did you talk them into that!?!!? I feel peculiar enough asking someone to take time to sign an autograph, but to do a drawing?!?! How did they have the time? |
#11talinthasAug 08, 2003 13:36:38 | never underestimate being a fanboy =) My player's handbook, for instance, has art from todd lockwood, sam wood, doug schuler, phil and kaja foglio, aaron williams, and jolly blackburn. Not to mention signatures from like 30 wotc and game designer folks. yeah, i'm a junkie |
#12zombiegleemaxAug 08, 2003 13:37:51 | I bow to your DL groupie skills. |
#13brimstoneAug 08, 2003 14:07:01 | Originally posted by talinthas Are there no pictures on the box or anything? I assume since you can't play it that it must use the old 5.25" disks? |
#14talinthasAug 08, 2003 14:22:31 | yeah, they're floppys, and for commodore at that, iirc. i dont know where it is these days. in some box somewhere in my house =) |
#15brimstoneAug 08, 2003 14:37:27 | Originally posted by talinthas Ah. If I remember correctly The Shadow Sorcerer was on 5.25" disks as well...and it seems like it was for a certain type of machine...but I don't remember which. I never got to play it...just read the super instructions. Essentially it's a "run away from Verminaard over the Plains without starving the refugees" game. ;) |
#16GranakrsAug 08, 2003 14:45:11 | Okay, I'm curious now. Tal and Tobin have started talking about rare dragonlance stuff. Normally I don't talk about my own collection because it's akin to bragging. And it's not fair to new folks who are just starting out on their own collections. But 've got to ask, what's on your list of the rare DL stuff. -I have a Khas Chess board (I only made two. one went to Margaret and Don. one for me), -Chinese(Taiwanese) copies of chronicles, -Every Audio book of every dragonlance novel that was a hard cover -Gnomes 100, DRagon 0 game book -Dragonwand of Krynn 1-on-1 game book -some AD&D DL adventure game books -a Lord Soth's Charge Poster -An official Dragonlance Sweatshirt (Gencon Only merchandise) -An official dragonance Baseball Cap (Gencon Only merchandise) -Dragonlance board game, and mage stones -Dragonlance Puzzles (using popular dragonlance/tsr art) -Some phone cards (using same popular dragonlance/tsr art) -DC Graphic novels of the chronicles. -European Hardcover collectors edition of the Tales Trilogy -TSR's Dragonlance Minatures Set 1 (NOT Ral Partha's minatures) I know there are other stuff that became too rare, or hard for me to get. THere are 9 promotional bookmarks out there. During TSR's glory days, there was a promotional book mark for each trilogy what was available from B Dalton Book stores. There were spellfire trading cards with Dragonlance stuff. There was a Vinyl model of the Red Dragon of Krynn, from the now defunct Screamin products. There are Raistlin hourglass contacts made by zealous cosplayers for gencon. A kencyclopedia t-shirt. Whitestone Council Tshirt Gencon/TSR Dragonlance badges. RPGA sponsered Dragonlance tournament modules. Hmmm Someone needs to make a list of the super rare stuff you simply can't buy.....? Granak Red-Silver Sivak |
#17brimstoneAug 08, 2003 14:59:30 | Originally posted by Granakrs Hmm...somewhere I've got a book mark (probably one you are speaking about) of Steel Brightblade from the cover of the Second Generation, 1st ed. That and the Board game are really the only items I have from your rarity list. I really think I was in the wrong part of the country for rare items such as those. Heck...I was in a bad place for DL in general...most of my collection (except for the 5th Age stuff) has been bought on line (via eBay). And even on eBay...the really rare stuff is hard to find. |
#18talinthasAug 08, 2003 15:03:35 | Yeah, i have the chinese chronicals, signed by margaret, no less =) See, when i went to visit wotc, Stan! gave me a big box full of rare DL stuff, and foreign editions. So i have the Dragonwands of Krynn one on one adventure book in shrinkwrap, gnomes 100 draconians 0, a few of those choose your own adventure ones, audio books, a ton of european versions of chronicals and preludes and crap.... what i want is what i've only seen twice, the japanese hardback of Leaves 1. |
#19zombiegleemaxAug 08, 2003 15:56:01 | I am definitely in the wrong part of the country to assemble a DL collection. When I started my collection around 1987 I think, I could find only one module, DL7. We have no gaming stores here and it was a fluke that the bookstore I was at had that. For over a year I had them try to track down more modules and they couldn't. (Or they were ignoring a 14 year old kid) I finally finished my WoTL collection a few weeks ago. I had been missing one module, DL4. I compensated for this with the DL Classics books. I was browsing ebay and came across DL4 and bought it. To my dismay it is missing the map, which wasn't advertised. I do have the Heroes, Villians, and Red Dragon of Krynn miniatures, as well as some of the individual packaged minis from Ral Partha. I would like to purchase a print of the painting on the cover of the Tales of the Lance boxed set, someday. Or maybe I can be as influential as talinthas was and get Larry Elmore to come over and paint a life-size mural of the heroes on my wall. :D |
