It looks like we'll be able to see Dave Arneson's Blackmoor in the not so distant future. As many of you already know, Blackmoor was the original setting for D&D, predating even Greyhawk by a couple years. Gary Gygax went on to incorporate the setting into Greyhawk, but I'm not sure how www.goodman-games.com will approach this release. Will it be an actual world or merely a microcosm of what was first released in the seventies? Does anyone have the scoop on what it will include?

Gleaning what I can from Dave Arneson's site, it will be closer to the Blackmoor released under the D&D Basic line:

TSR9172 DA1 Adventures in Blackmoor '86
TSR9175 DA2 Temple of the Frog '86
TSR9191 DA3 City of the Gods '87
TSR9205 DA4 Duchy of Tenh '87

which is almost nothing like the Blackmoor as it appears in Greyhawk, except for a few place names and characters that are carried over.

Excellent. Modules I had meant to collect but never got round to doing so. I've always wanted to see the Frog temple and the City of the Gods.

Cool. Thirty years of development between two covers. I just hope Arneson really put his all into this because I'm buying it sight unseen.

Any word on a release date? Goodman seems to be dragging their feet on this.

For those of you that don't know, Arneson had a stroke a while back. He's recovering nicely but that may have had something to due with the delay.

Shame to hear it. Looks like he has some good people working for him, though. I wonder how much this will diverge from the First Fantasy Campaign that he released for Judges Guild(?) back in, what was it, '77?. Man, I'm starting to date myself...

A friend of mine had that boxed set. It was pretty cool, if I remember correctly.

I read the Basic D&D modules and I found the setting to be very cool. However, it does not mesh well with Greyhawk and I am doubtful if it will be easy to integrate it in any Greyhawk campaign. Still, I look forward to see it in print.

If you're curious, there's one on eBay right now, cheap too:

I had read of Arneson's sad misfortune some time back, so I'm wondering if he's had total creative control of the Blackmoor project since then or whether he served in the capacity of a creative consultant. Goodman games has been rather tight-lipped about the whole thing up to know, remarking that Dave was involved in all aspects of the book but not really elaborating beyond that. Anyone have info on this?

I remember reading the same thing(s), except that Arneson was consulting with the writers who were putting it to paper. I think they were working with his hand-written notes, or something to that effect. Don't quote me on that, though. It was a while back. Maybe a year ago.

That said, I hope it turns out well. I'm really looking forward to it. That and the new Dragoneye...

Still no word from Goodman games. Looks like they're gonna miss the Christmas rush...

FYI, this book has been ready to go to print for months and months. The holdup is in legal negotiations with WotC. Regards.

Perhaps I should have started a new thread for this, but Blackmoor fans might be more knowledgeable regarding the Egg of Coot. Any facts or guesses as to who or what the Egg is?

The description of the Egg of Coot from Dave Arneson's "First Fantasy Campaign" is online at http://www.dnd.starflung.com/eggocoot.html . Funny stuff.

Funny, yes, and somewhat harsh. Since there always seem to be people "in the know" on these boards, was this just a barb between friends in a competitive business, or was there actual animosity between the two??
It can be read either way.

Wouldn't be EGG an acronym for Ernst Gary Gygax? I always thought that it was Arneson joking with his former friend.
