Allo all, since I'm playing in the future of Dragonlance, and I have no plans to give the elves back their homelands, I was thinking that the subrace stats don't really reflect the new reality.

So I came up with these three concepts for subraces:

Elf, Exile (Valthonesti) - basically wandering tribes that have adapted to new terrains, whether it be desert, marsh, hills, mountains, or even underground.

Elf, Ghetto - Elves adapted to the city, which is an unnatural ecosystem, in its own way. Elves have skills related to street survival, civil politics, favours etc.

Elf, Desolation - Elves adapted to the desolation, of course. The magical nature of this terrain has proved... interesting.

These will replace the Kagonesti, Qualinesti, and Silvanesti. A hard decision, but old things must fade for new things to arise. I really can't see keeping them around, with all of their cultural hangups, forever.

Thoughts? New subraces that you see developing from the exile?

I like the exile idea, as a sort of non-dark elf thing. But the rest? Not to convinced on those. Of course I would keep the Qualanesti, Kaganesti and Silvanesti simply because that relates more to their decendants.

Yep, my point was that eventually these cultural groups will have to fade without a homeland. To use historical examples (which I don't like to do) consider the melting pot of North America, or the diaspora of the Jewish people.

Eventually cultures will change, adapt, and old ways will fade. Now granted, a lot of the cultural legacies will live on in the new subraces. All three subraces still pay token homage to "The Speaker" (Gilthas) as a figure of unity and tradition, even if he has no real power.

As valid as your point is, remember that the elves are about as stuborn as the Knights of Solamnia.

I don't believe that the Minotaurs who conquered Silvanost could resist taking elven slaves. That said perhaps there is room for a 'darker' breed of elf in your campaign who perhaps blames the other elves for the loss of Mina's love? Or even an elvish race in the service of Sargonnas?

Just a thought or two...

Hmm. Remember how there were all those sickly elves in Silvanesti because of the life-draining effects of the Silvanesti Shield? What kind of elves are the elves born during this draining period? Here's an idea ...

Elf, Gimp

Stats: -2 to all physical, no bonuses to mental (who has time to learn when you're always sick?)

Speed: 20 ft. (they're gimps, remember?)

Racial traits:
Pitiful (Ex): They get a +4 bonus on diplomacy checks to convince others to give them handouts (e.g. money, clothes, shelter, a quick death).
No free martial weapon proficiencies (too sickly)
Favored Class: Commoner (they suck at everything else, why not here too?)
All other elven traits the same.

Seriously, the exile elf subrace is a cool idea. Perhaps they'd get a +2 bonus on survival in addition to other skills useful for their new terrain.
