IMC the Fists of Hextor, under guidance of Ivid V, were ordered to kill or kidnap the PCs since they possess a set of artifact-power amulets that are extremely powerful. The Fists gave the PCs a run for their money and forced them to flee into the Underdark where they can't be scried or teleported to immediately. Unfortunately, the Fists captured one of the PCs.

The player of the PC is no longer with us. However, I am running a side-trek campaign for my group to rescue the character from the Fists of Hextor and the Mad Overking. (It will give us a chance to test out 3.5 before going back to our main characters.) I've decide that Ivid has imprisoned the character in Rauxes and I'm wondering if the city has ever been detailed before. I don't need a 3rd edition version since I just want a layout of the city, like an overhead or something. I'm also wondering if there is any official source that describes the magical haze that surrounds Rauxes now. All the LGG says is that no one can safely approach it.

If it hasn't been detailed, then I'm considering making it like a permanant unhallow effect that has the potential to drive PCs mad if they are exposed for longer than 24 hours (like magical disease). It also causes all slain characters with NPC class levels to be raised as zombies or skeletons and all slain characters with PC class levels to be raised as swordwraiths. Those who die of natural causes become wraiths. I figure the city is crawling with undead and fiends, many of them probably mad. The overking is strangely immune to the effect, as well as some of his more important subordinates like Karoolck.

Can anyone offer any help? Perhaps you have designed a way to handle the effects in your campaign. If so I'd like to hear how you did it so I can come up with something for my campaign.

The time frame is late CY 591 and the PCs are 9th level.

A fan created a map of Rauxes in CC2 format. It should be available here, but presently the link appears broken. I'll email the editors and suggest you check back at the end of today (Friday).

Thanks Tizoc. I actually went looking through my massive numbers of downloads on my computer and discovered that I have that map already. It helps enormously.

Now, can anyone help me with the magical aura?

I have a few ideas about Rauxes that I discussed in the Greytalk channel, predominantly with chatdemon. I can't remember exactly what was his idea or mine but the end result was something I quite liked. The following is my version, as best I can remember.

Basically the idea was that Rauxes was such an absolute pit of evil and, not just evil, but immense power, that when the Crook of Rao was used to banish all fiends from Oerth, the immense power of that stave and the immense power within Rauxes clashed. Instead of exploding or just cancelling each other out, it was as if the universe reached a compromise and sent the city hurtling into the demi-plane of dread, but with a direct connection to that plane on Oerth. Therefore creating a 'dome' of magical energy surrounding the city. Beyond the dome is the demi-plane where the city dwells, and Ivid is the power of that plane.

There were also some side-treks discussed that changed the nature of the above. IIRC, I think one was that some deal was made with Kath, the Undead Knight, and that other guy who went to the demi-plane... name starts with A... anyway, there were all sorts of connections and reasons and things that happened to cause this event but I'm sure you could come up with your own, 'behind the scenes' steps.

Oh, oops... I kinda assumed everyone knew what the demi-plane of dread is. It's what Ravenloft is based around. I don't think it's detailed in MotP. But there are surely some cheap 2nd ed Ravenloft products hanging around that you could pick up somewhere... maybe even as PDF's on that website that sells the Greyhawk ones. There's probably a lot of stuff on fan websites as well.

Azalin! That was the other dudes name who was the other 'victim' of the demi-plane of dread from Greyhawk.

Ok, now I know why that sounded so familiar. I'll have to check my old ravenloft sourcebooks. thanks.
