Aug 30, 2003 3:35:26 there shall be no more debate, i have heard it pronounced from margaret weis herself. the correct way is RAY-SLIN. hope this puts that little debate to rest. freind always pronounced it ROS-LIN. another guy calls him WRAA-SLIN.

Yup...that's how it's done.....And that's how I heard it pronounced by the DL Queen herself.

Jeff grubb posted somewhere how all the gods were supposed to be pronounced. i'll try to find it and paste it here.

raistlin and caramon are named based off of wasted man and caring man, so its Rayst-lin and Care-ah-mon.

the name i found really wierd is Bupu. I pronounce it BooPoo, but margaret says Buh-poo.

and usha is pronounced OO-sha. don't argue with this one. its an indian name, and my aunt's name at that =)

That still doesn't answer the question of how Margaret and Tracy pronounce it. I am aware that Laurana is named after Tracy's wife, but if I told you "Laurana is like Laura, so when you pronounce it the 'na' is silent" would you take me at my word? I think not.

Now if you or Chris or Jamie tell me how Margaret herself says it, that will be good enough for me.

I pronouce it the second way, but I don't know how right it is.

I pronounce Caramon right, but I pronounce Raistlin without the "I" sound, so it yields Rastlin(like cast, mast and fast).

The gods are pretty fun, I pronounce Reorx 'Roarx' and Takhisis 'Tah-kiss-iss'

Don't even get me started on my pronounciation of dragons.

This... c'mon. There is no "official" way of saying Raistlin or Lauralanthalasa or Fistandantilus or Bupu, so why don't we all try to avoid the "you are wrong" comments until the Official Dragonlance Pronunciation Guide comes out.

Of course, maybe you were tongue-in-cheek, and maybe LAGO understood that. I suppose it's possible.

Getting back on track here, I call her "lo-RAH-nuh" and "LO-ruh-lahn-THA-luh-sah." It flows better IMO. I also think MW is the only one I've ever heard say "buh-poo".

course, those who know arabic can pronounce tanis like the ancient egyptian city, and indians like me can pronounce usha like the sanskrit word, and rocks can say flint...

Besides, today was a really long day, and i have been under lots of stress, and times like this, even little things set me off.

I'm a fan, too. But i think you exaggerate the hole theme. Of course you can talk about how to pronounce DL Names (although i wouldn't ), but you don't have to affront others because they think they know how to pronounce a word correctly.

Sep 01, 2003 7:58:28 I read Grubb's article. I prononced most of the names the way he meant them to be but then I got to Majere. that's maybe the name used the most and I never thought of saying it like this:
Ma-Jee-Re. i thought its said 'Ma-Jeer'.
I like it better pronounced Majeer.

Afterall, when you read a novel, the name you hear in your head is how you will pronounce it, since there are generally no fast pronouncing guides out there...

but man, raist and caramon are pretty set in stone ;)

"Jeff Grubb: I think it was Harold Johnson who gave the brothers their names. He saw them as being the thin, wimpy mage and the burly fighter. Raistlin descended from 'Wasting Man', while Caramon from 'Caring Man'."

So, the "rhymes with 'waist'" way is the correct one. Similarly, "Laurana" is inspired by "Laura", so you pronounce it like that and just add the "-na" to it.

I am going to use all my wit and charm and powers of research and get the official pronunciations for as many DL words as possible.....I hope to have quite a list. I know everybody has their own pronunciations in their head....but....I like official stuff....that and my children are named for DL characters....One of whose name discussion was discussed in this very thread.
