I'm interested in hearing what others have to say about how they DM certain situations. Thus this is a sortof 'series' of questions relating to various topics. All will start with, "How would you do it?" and have a subtitle which is the topic to be discussed.

The first one is Nobles of the Flanaess.

When dealing with nobles, how do you roleplay them and the situation? How do you vary it for different nations? What do you classify as a noble? Can merchants be noble? How do you describe the attire and mannerisms of nobles of various areas? Are there any special things a PC must do to gain an audience with a noble? What are their surroundings? Do they have bodyguards or do they appear alone?

Essentially, anything you can think of that can help others DM such situations where PC's either meet or fight or get awarded titles or whatever that has to do with nobility, would be appreciated.

Well, for me it depends on the genral condition of the nation or free city state.

One thing I feel that will be constant is bodygaurds.

Nobles may not be in power, in such a case the individual would not necessarily want to advertise his status. Still, even wandering Sherwood Forest Robin of Locksley had a close retinue of allies to protect him.

The other constant would be that to see said noble one must first convince the gaurds of your intent. In the movie Braveheart we see a good example of this, when the two new volunteers arrive and have to submit to being searched and questioned. All that being said it is possible to slip a dagger past the guards.

Attitude and mannerisms is again based on the general conditions of the land. In a well established feudal monarchy the noble will be more refined. Jewelry and fasionable clothes would be the norm. Weather they are grounded or haughty is dependant on the character, his/her alignment, and the DMs ability to infuse the noble with life.

In the end, It all depends......

Social class is one subject that Living Fantasy really covers thoroughly and convincingly, with details of dress, relations with other classes, and everything else.
