I've been reading DL and FR for some time, and I'd like to start roleplaying. Do you know what sourcebooks and such I need if I want to learn how? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

From the perspective of a Player only- all you would need is the Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook produced by Wizards of the Coast.

Said book covers all of the base rules that a player needs to enjoy D&D.

Beyond that you would of course need a pencil and paper, along with a set of dice... noteably a d4/d6/d8/d10/d12/d20.

If you wish to play within the Forgotten Realms or DragonLance settings then it would be helpful though not absolutely necessary to purchase the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting or the DragonLance Campaign Setting.

After that, all you need is a group to play D&D with!

Well and a couple people to play with... which is often the hardest part. I suggest looking at your local hobby/gaming/comicbook store. They usually have some sort of board where people can stick a message that they are looking for a group or looking for players.

Good luck man, for many of us the hardest part is finding a good group.

Another question, what kind of handbook do I need? I mean, I looked it up on bn.com, and theres "Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook: Core Rulebook I" and "D&D Player's Handbook 3.5 Edition (Dungeons & Dragons)" and "Defenders of the Faith (Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Series): A Guidebook to Clerics and Paladins", etc. Which one do I need?

The bold one.

If you want to be up to date you need the D&D Player's Handbook 3.5 Edition.
All products named "Advanced" Dungeons and Dragons are old.

If you want play as Dungeon Master you also need the Dungeon Master Guide (V3.5) and the Monster Manual (V3.5)
