#1zombiegleemaxOct 09, 2003 16:49:38 | Now, I don't claim to know much about Ravenloft aside from Strahd himself, but I picked up a copy of "Vecna Reborn" recently and it's labelled Ravenloft as opposed to Greyhawk. I do know that the evil demi-plane of dread chooses ultimately evil beings and traps them within their own domain there yada yada bla bla. Since Vecna was one of those chosen am I to understand Ravenloft is a sub-setting to Greyhawk? Or, is it one mutt of a setting with evil doers trapped within from all settings? I'm really not grasping this... |
#2zombiegleemaxOct 09, 2003 17:02:30 | There are "evil NPCs" from various campaign settings trapped in Ravenloft, so no, it isn't a sub-Greyhawk campaign. The Kargatane's webpage is an excellent Ravenloft source. That, or pick up some of the books to get a better grasp of it. |
#3zombiegleemaxOct 09, 2003 17:32:48 | Besides the presence of Vecna & Kas I don't think Ravenloft is GH specific at all. I played that recently and it was pretty good although the party can get dead real quick if they deviate from the path or even remotely step out of line. Mature audiences only too IMHO, particularly the way my ethically challenged PC solved the final 'dillema' :D |
#4zombiegleemaxOct 09, 2003 17:48:20 | So, in essence I could liken the "demi-plane of dread" with "wild space/the phlogistan" in that they both are not stand alone campaigns persay and are virtual links of sorts to all the main campaign settings? I think! Abysslin |

#6zombiegleemaxOct 09, 2003 18:38:34 | Or maybe it was the City of Greyhawk box set, or perhaps both. Scott |

#8zombiegleemaxOct 10, 2003 10:45:18 | Originally posted by abysslin As I have no idea what they are I'll just look wise and nod sagely ;) Although this is certain to get me in trouble, I've always thought that as the main settings seem to have the same outer planes ,and a set of dieties/demons etc that match to various extents, that there is no reason that the FR Abyss is not the same Abyss as in GH. They are in essence alternate realities existing in the same place but unaware of each other, kinda 5th dimensional thinking, so that GH people can't use the outer planes to get to FR but in theory could meet in one of the various outer planes. or seperate planets if you like spelljammer (which I personally don't) but whatever floats your boat. (please commence throwing rotten eggs and over ripe tomatos ) Either way the Vecna-Ravenloft scenarios are pretty good IMHO if you can inject a bit of creepy wierdness into them to wind the players up :D |
#9ArgonOct 10, 2003 16:09:04 | IMO Ravenloft was only pulling from the Greyhawk and Dragonlance settings. I don't know if this was a way of attracting new players to the setting or if the writer's of the setting were just plan lazy. But I like Vecna and for the later case Lord Soth to remain in their own game worlds. IMO ravenloft would of been better as a purely gothic setting without demi-human races. The setting just works better with humans. The fey and goblyns are good substances for fear affects. We chatted about Vecna last night in Greytalk! Some great ideas were thrown around. Mainly that Kas is seen as a hero in Keoland. Many of the commoners never knew him as Vecna's general. In fact the people of the land only know Vecna as the nameless one. Be careful of the nameless one, for when you call him he will come ! You should really check the GT archives on Vecna ! |

#11zombiegleemaxOct 11, 2003 2:53:16 | Vecna and Kas don't live there anymore... |
