...to liven up the evening.

How long has everyone been playing Dark Sun? Is it the only setting you play?

I think I have been playing DS for about 7 years, give or take. I avoided it at first, because the descriptions I had heard sounded dreary. I played Forgotten Realms then slipped into Dark Sun quietly and loved it. Now I still play both, as a contrast to one another.

My husband and I named our daughter Sadira. We must have been nuts, but we have gotten a lot of compliments on it.

"What a pretty name, where did you get it?"
"Ummm, from a book."
That usually covers it. I don't think my mother-in-law would have appreciated "It's the name of a half elven **** sorceress from a group of role playing books we read."

Though I did once find the name Sadira in a baby name book it said it was Persian and it meant Lotus blossum.

I first started in the summer of 1991. I played with a group of fellow Marines I had just been to the Gulf War (I) with - memories of sandy wastes were very fresh in our minds.

I sort of lost interest in about 1993 - the group moved on due to transfers, and I was too busy to role-play with any regularity.

I got back into it about two years ago, and have subsequently bought everything printed for it. It's my favorite rpg setting, with Planescape and Tekumel close behind.

My fiance would disown me if I tried that. And I'm sure she'd object even more to naming a son "Dregoth," sadly...

I started playing Dark Sun while in AIT (US Army traning), about '95 I think it was. And no, it's not the only setting I play in (nor is D&D the only system). Of the "old" AD&D Worlds, I preferred DS, Ravenloft and Planescape. The new Dragonlance for d20 is pretty good, and I've been looking for books on the Warcraft RPG out now. Plus I have my own complex campaign setting I've been stewing over for the last decade or two.

Been playing DS since 93. Heard some very poor descriptions of the setting when it came, so I thought it was simply a power gamer setting with no real story (I mean, PCs start at 3rd level, stats go up to 24, everyone has psionics). I finally broke down and picked up Ivory Triangle, amazed at the nifty cover art by Brom. Within a week we had our first DS game up and running and we've been playing DS ever since.

Granted, we also take time to dive into other strange and unique settings as well like Skyrealms of Jorune, Earthdawn, a few homebrews, Paranoia, Greyhawk, and Planescape, to name a few (with Planescape comming in at #2 favorite setting). Still, Dark Sun reigns in as the heavyweight titleholder for 2 seperate gaming groups and shows no signs of stopping any time soon.

I guess back in 90 or 91, whenever it started.
My brother owned a comic book store and he wanted to expand into RPGs. I happily helped him get into it and the Dark Sun 1st box set was one of the first games we got. I have to admit it was Brom's art that got me.
Haven't done too much in it for the last 5 years, until I started on these boards and trying to play Dark Sun online back in 2002.

Started back in 92, played the same campaign for 6 years and advanced in game time 6 years! Dragons Crown itself took 3 - 4 (I think) months of playing Fri night, Sat and Sat night every damn week.
I was big skeptic at first automatically thought it was munchkin land. Our original DM was a munchkin but he left after 5 or 6 months anyway. My first chars were a Preserver (I liked the idea of stuggleing against the world) , a Fighter, a Gladiator (I noticed the way the fighter clas had been split into a 'General' and a 'hand to hander', the fighter had really high Cha) and finally what became my favourite character a Halfling cleric/thief (fastest level progression) who was created simply to boost the others levels.
Over the years we lost players and gained players (one of whom had been fed the 'roleplaying is evil' line before meeting me).
DS became 'my' campaign eventually and I retired from playing except when the others took a turn at GMing.
DS is still my favourite, but a close second is ConX, enjoyed spelljammer a lot (guns, giant space hamsters, space penguins, falling from orbit. Whats not to love.) Second longest running game was WarhammerFRP, our light relief (snotlings, and familiars with higher Int than anyone in the party) which we ran on most sundays. Died alot in MERPs. Lots of other stuff played but not going to list it all (Jon will soften me up with lightning bolts and then sik the Space Hamsters of Static Attraction and Verboseness on me)

Always liked that name, very pretty.

Learn something new everyday.

Anyways, been playing DS since 91, got the first box set as a gift from a friend. He originally bought it for himself and didn't like it and thought I would enjoy it since I was always into the bizarre and different. I was hooked from the begining.

Been running campaigns on and off since then, but has just recently put it to the side for awhile till the 3.5 version is set and ready to go so I can make tweaks that and I've been running a FR Epic campaign and with the other things in my life just don't have the time to run two different camapaigns. Plus I am looking for new players that might enjoy the setting more, since the majority of the players I have now don't really enjoy it.

I'm also pondering doing a conversion of the real Athas based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom. So expect crimsonsun.org to have that up sometime in the future.

Oh and btw, Brom rocks! :D

Beleave it or not I have a friend of mine who called his first son Tanis( half-elf in Dragonlance) and his second; Raistlin.
Unique but beautifull name none the less.
Congradulation, I personnaly find Sadira, exotic.
