In a follow up to the Flanaess thread, how about Suloise?

I always used to say Sool-waaars (-waaars kinda sounding like the letter R)

but then heard Mialee on the Scourge of worlds DVD things say Sool-oo-ees.

Not that it matters, just curious

Well, what we need is an official pronunciation guide for Greyhawk!

Around our table, we say it almost like Mialee - we say Sool-oyse, like "Oi, mate!". But we can adapt Mialee's pronunciation...

Lenard Lakofka wrote in the Oerth Journal #1 that the word Suel comes from the Suloise words "Se-Ul," meaning People of Ul. But then Suel is spelled S-U-E-L, switching the U and E. Is the transposing of the U and E a mistake, or is the SUEL spelling just a function of Suloise syntax and transliteration? It's one of those tiny, insignificant Greyhawk things that I always wonder about.

Maybe a pronunciation project should be commissioned.

Actually there was a pronunciation guide for Greyhawk in an old dragon magazine. Cwslyclgh's and Mialee's pronunciation are both correct.

Len Lakofka only helped with writing the history of the suloise. Steve Wilson was the author, and he put a whole bunch a crap from his personal campaign in it. The se-ul was one of them. That statement was dropped in a later version of OJ1, as Steve realized he misspelled Suel.

I am not fond of Steve Wilson.

I'm sure there's a pronounciation guide in one of the books already... The Adventure Begins or the Player's Guide, IIRC. I can't be bothered looking but I'm positive that one exists somewhere.

Okay, very nice. I think we got to the bottom of this one. I agree on the correct pronunciation. Thanks fellas.

Regarding the OJ, it should have been Su-El, in the Wilson/Lakofka treatment. And the transliteration should be "People of Su". Is that right?

See? I was right! I love being right. I just hate going to all the bother to prove myself right all the time. Especially when I know other people will eventually do it for me :D

Eh, trust me on that, that's not the way it sounds in french (but damned if I could find something similar in english, if only because "u" has a very different sound in the two languages)

Regarding the OJ, it should have been Su-El, in the Wilson/Lakofka treatment. And the transliteration should be "People of Su". Is that right?

.. which begs the question: did the Suel "breed" the infamous Su-Monster too?
