#1brimstoneNov 03, 2003 10:04:14 | Okay...I've got a new question to ask...I would like to get a concensus...and maybe some discussion going on this. Okay...according to old...no, let me start at the beginning.... According to Dragonlance Adventures the 12 warnings of the Cataclysm start 13 days before the end of the year, with the Cataclysm happening on the 13 day (Year Day, I assume). Most other sources state that the first warning started on the 1st day of Yule ("December" 22nd) with the Cataclysm happening on the 13th day, "January" 3rd. (this was back when Dragonlance's calendar mirrored our own) SAGA changed the calendar to 12 months with 30 days each. So now, the first warning came on the Eve of Yule, with the Cataclysm happening on the 13th day...which was still "January" 2nd. Now, with the DLCS...it says "The Cataclysm happend on the 13th day of Yule, which was the 3rd day of the new year." But...there's a problem. The new calendar now has 12 months with 28 days each. And, because of the equilibrium of the months...the Winter Solstice (ie, Yule) happens on the 21st of "December" not the 22nd. Which means the 13th day of Yule is actually "January" 5th. So...the question is...do we: A) Retcon Dark Day to falling two days later (along with Tarsis' Regatta Day). B) Retcon Yule to no longer being on the Winter Solstice (change it to "December" 19th) C) Retcon the start of the warnings to 2 days prior to the first day of Yule. D) Say that Krynn's new orbit is now much shorter that it used to be. That way, we keep the old dates, knowing that there are no longer 13 days between Yule and the 3rd of the new Year. Also...as a follow up...what time of year do you believe the end of Dragons of a Vanished Moon takes place? Winter, Spring, Summer, or Autumn? Thanks everyone! |

Since the warnings started happening on the eve of Yule, it is very easy to consider the eve of Yule two days. I would avoid D like the friggin plague and A just does the same thing as C, only backwards. We do know(I think) that the Cataclysm did happen on the 3rd day of the year, so moving its date around is kinda sloppy. |
#3shugiNov 03, 2003 11:16:39 | D indeed appears to be most accurate. In Legends, the true clerics disappeared from the land shortly before Yule, so this helps to corroborate that event. |
#4zombiegleemaxNov 03, 2003 12:31:06 | Add my vote to option C, as it seems as the least complicated. As far as I am concerned, any "accurate" or "hard" data for events P.C. are best guesses due to the loss of historical records in the chaos that followed. George |
#5brimstoneNov 03, 2003 13:23:58 | Originally posted by Shugi Did you mean C Shug? D doesn't really fit your explination... So...so far that means 3 votes for "C" and one for "A" (on another on-line community). Thanks peeps...keep 'em comin'. |
#6shugiNov 03, 2003 17:57:04 | C, D... they're just letters... ;) Oops. Thanks for the catch. |
#7zombiegleemaxNov 03, 2003 21:53:03 | I'd say go with D). You can say that Krynn had to develop a new calendar after Takhissis moved the planet. *shiver* It wouldn't be unreasonable for Krynn to have a new orbit then. You can say that Pre-Chaos War Krynn used the Old Calendar, but now that the planet has moved they use the New Calendar. So, for translating the important dates such as Yule to the new Calendar you keep the same dates. Yule starts on December 22nd (or whatever) on the Old Calendar; now it starts on December 22nd on the New Calendar. Now if you're running a campaign that's Pre-Chaos War use the Old Calendar and for Post-Chaos War use the New Calendar. If you run a Post-Chaos War campaign and you refer to a Pre-Chaos War event you could say something like: "The Cataclysm struck on the 13th day of Yule, January 3th, according to the Old Calendar." As for marking the date of the Cataclysm on the New Calendar, does it really matter. Is it a date that people celebrate/observe in Post-Chaos War times? Basically I like to think that the change in number of days per month to 28 is a result of Krynn being moved. So what would we do if Earth was moved to a new orbit? I think we'd make a new calendar to reflect it. Then again I only experience Dragonlance through the novels so the Calendar doesn't really affect me much. |
#8daedavias_dupNov 03, 2003 23:31:29 | I just realized this. Couldn't you introduce the concept of a leap year into Krynn? I'm not quite sure how it would work with the Night of the Eye, but somehow it should work. Have it happen like every 500 years or so... |
#9zombiegleemaxNov 04, 2003 7:49:18 | Both of those seem overly complicated, to me. My vote goes for C. |
