On Chapter 2, on the entry of the Bariaur you state that it's outsider hit dice give him +1 For, +3 Ref and +3 Will, when in the Book of Exalted Deeds it states that those HDs give +3 to all saving throws. It also states that a Bariaur has (2+int mod)x6 skill points, while in the book of Exalted Deeds it says is (8+int mod)x6. At the end of it, you state that a Bariaur is ECL 5, so a first level Bariaur will count as a 5th level character an will have 4 HD (3d8 of outsider + first class HD). While it should say that a 1st level Bariaur character will count as a 6th level character (an ECL 5 race+1 level is ECL 6). Once again, great work so far, I specially like the chapter with the Factions ^_^ |
#2primemover003Nov 11, 2003 16:38:21 | Since when did bariaur get more than one HD? The MotP has them as a Medium sized Monstrous Humanoid with 1 HD. This way they only have a +1 ECL. I don't like the new BoED Bariaur with it's over the top LA and HD. What do ya'll think! |
#3Shemeska_the_MarauderNov 11, 2003 20:25:06 | I noticed the changes to the Bariaur in the BoED as well... And thus the grand tradition of stat inflation continues... each new book trying to out trump the last. *sigh* (I rather liked the book myself actually. It at least attributed the slide of Arcadia's lower layer into Mechanus as both recent and the fault of the Harmonium) |
#4moogle001Nov 11, 2003 21:11:57 | Aside from the stated ECL, which is a typo, the rest of it is due to the fact that we are treating bariaur as monstrous humanoids, not outsiders. Apparently WotC has already abandened their new policy on differentiating between what is an outsider and what is just extraplanar. *shrug* |
#5incenjucarNov 11, 2003 23:04:57 | *sighs* Remember in 2e when you could use most races at level 1, without having the otherwise-nice Savage Species book shoved down your throat? 2e seems to have had a greater unity between writers and books... DVD aside... |
#6moogle001Nov 11, 2003 23:16:49 | 2E also had some very odd restrictions of level advancement for such races ;) In any case, we're probably going to look into variants to play all races as ECL 0 or create racial progression. But that's for future supplements. |
#7sildatorakNov 12, 2003 0:35:53 | Originally posted by Incenjucar I don't know about that. I think there were at least three published sets of rules for combat manuvers such as parrying, disarming, etc. Of course that meant you could pick the one that you liked best… |
#8zombiegleemaxNov 12, 2003 4:10:09 | OK. I just didn't notice it had Monstrous humanoid HDs. I actually prefer the Outsider ones... they are more balanced for it's ECL, to make this reasonable, I treat Bariaurs as Native Outsiders (like Aasimar and Thieflings for an example) so it has no problem for Raise Dead spells and the such. |
#9bob_the_efreetNov 12, 2003 16:01:09 | The Planescape view is that the outsider type goes away. See, since 'outsider' effectively means 'someone who's not from the Material Plane', in PS that amounts to pretty much everyone. So certain special races get to remain outsiders (but renamed to 'exemplar'), while all the other outsiders get scattered into the appropriate creature types. |
#10alien_rope_burnNov 12, 2003 23:26:50 | I think the monstrous humanoid classification is definitely better. Hell, I'm pretty iffy about Planetouched counting as Outsiders... I like to see that type reserved for the 'planar creatures' - demons, modrons, aasimon, etc. Outsider hit dice are muy tough to balance, IMO. I'm not sure why Savage Species doesn't make the differentiation between the great outsider hit dice and something relatively lousy, like fey. |
