Essentially if you knew a base power like "Matter Manipulation: Fire" you could form fire into all kinds of cool shapes. However it was not easy to reliably achieve a particular effect (like a cage of fire) unless you had developed a particular "power stunt" called "Cage of Fire". Anyway the way you got power stunts was practice. After successfully performing the stunt 10 times you got to write it on your sheet and the penalty for using it was negated. We could to this with psionics. Essentially a Psionic character can attempt ANY psionic power for which he meets the prerequisites. Attempting such an "untrained" Power has a -4 circumstance modifier to the activation roll and all failures deliver (primary) feedback. After a Psionic has successfully performing the effect 6 times (these must be "real" or "important" tests at the GMs discretion. Practicing in ideal circumstances provides no significant benefit towards being able to use the power "under fire") the Psionic character may add the power to his/her character sheet. Comments? |

For myself, I liked better the opportunity in v4 to have each individual Mental Mutation (with a score) to get a permanent bonus after so many sucessful uses. This was not a standard rule. My character has the mutation where you can 'disconnect' the target's muscular control nerves for a few seconds, causing them to fall in a heap. Man, the trouble I could cause with THAT if I had a near-nil chance to miss! You would have to write the chains of 'basic' and 'improvements' mutations yourself, of course. |
