I've looked high and low, but for some reason I can't find an updated version of this guy. What gives?

See Dragon #290. One of the best Greyhawk articles ever put to paper. All about Death Knights.

An updated version of a death knight?,,,, Have you seen Lord of the Rings?,,, the ring wraiths are the closest thing to a death knight that has ever been portrayed. Spooky

...I just read through Bastion of Faith for the first time. Has anyone adapted the Death Knight Ferrante (fallen Paladin of Heironeous) to the new history of Death Knights outlined by Gary Holian in Dragon 290-291?

Thanks OleOneEye!

Dragon issues 290 & 291, I don't recall off hand which one had the template for creating new characters.

But in my vision, Death Knights are seperated into 2 groups:

The Original 13 + St. Kargoth.....the victims of a curse which made them the first Death Knights of Oerth (and to some extent bind them to Demogorgon's will) about 400 years ago.

New death knights (created since then) either by demgorgon or other demon lords and princes (especially Orcus.) While lacking the original curse (which makes them virtually immortal), they are also not quite as powerful as the first lot. However they have alot more freedom of action in some cases. Lord Ferrante would fall into this crowd. They can be from anywhere in the Flanaess.

I thought Kargoth was one of the 13 original, Gary (I swore that's what you wrote, & what the original description in the 1E Fiend Folio read).

I recently found mention of another Oerthly Death Knight in Die Vecna, Die! called Sir Loran Trollkeep, who was originally from an area of Sunndi near the Vast Swamp.

I don't have Bastion of Faith, thus I'm not familiar with Ferrante. Does anyone know of any other Death Knights of Oerth?

And while we're at it, I know Dragonlance has Lord Soth--does FR have any death knights? Did Soth become a death knight before Kargoth (Kargoth predates him in RL, but what about in game time)?

I think I have an answer to my own question. According to this (http://www.geocities.com/billezell/timeline.html), Soth became a death knight in 0 PC, which, according to the Unified Timeline of the Spheres occurs about 223 CY. Kargoth & company went to the dark side about 20 years earlier.

I forgot--Sir Farian of Lirtham was slain by St Benedor in 209 CY. So there are only 13 originals left.

They really need a St Kargoth avatar.

The history of Kargoth and his minions plus the Death Knight template is in Dragon #290, pages 103-4.
Dragon #291 contains detailed stats of 4 of the 13. Five of them are given a short history, while the last 4 are briefly mentioned (with lvl).

Definitely worth the buy in my opinion. I so love Death Knights!!:D

I know the Dragonlance CS book has a whole section on how to build a death knight. That might prove useful if your building a whole NPC on it.
