#1OrnumDec 05, 2003 18:15:18 | I always thought that the description and benefits of using baatorian green steel in weapon creation were in Volo's Guide to All Things Magical, but I just looked over the guide, and it wasn't. Now, I can only assume that the rules for the metal are found in some Planescape supplement. So, to all you Planescape gurus out there, which supplement was it found in? I don't have any of my Planescape stuff around, so I'm asking you which one I need to get back from my Keeper of the Tomes (or storage unit, or fellow gamer, or whatever you want to classify him). I'm trying to convert the magical item creation portion of Volo's Guide to 3.5, and the addition of planar metals is something that I would like to include. Also, does a weapon need to be made entirely of a metal that can overcome DR, or can that metal be part of an alloy that the weapon is made of? A weapon exists in my campaign (by 2e rules, +3, +5 versus tanar'ri and spell turning abilities) that is made of an alloy of silver, the above mentioned steel, and another metal that I can't recall, and I need to either convert it or totally rework it. |
#2primemover003Dec 05, 2003 18:20:26 | Firstly Baatorian Green Steel is in the Planewalkers Handbook. It is also in the Arms and Equipment guide (3e). For DR purposes, the business end of the weapon (blade or head) must be made from the material in question. No alloy's to overcome multiple DR's. AFAIK Green Steel isn't a material that overcomes any DR (unless homebrewed). |
#3OrnumDec 05, 2003 18:50:20 | Ah, a reason to actually buy the Arms and Equipment Guide. I also assume that the other metals are in it as well. As for green steel not overcoming DR, I am aware of that. It just made sense to me when determining the creation process of the weapon that I mentioned above that it partly be made of green steel, since it was created for the purpose of slaying tanar'ri. Also, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if the alloy contained silver or not, but it did contain whatever metal could hurt tanar'ri. My sole purpose to asking the questions was to determine how I could convert the weapon to become 3.5 compliant, as it is an important item on my game world, as well as determine how to convert the old magical item creation process from Volo's Guide to 3.5, at least the research and material requirements of making custom items. Also, I find the current magical item creation process to be very plain (masterwork sword + feat + finger of death spell + experience points = Nine Lives Stealer). I was always a fan of researching what it takes to make the weapon and then going on a few quests to acquire the appropriate materials. Thanks for the info, though. |
#4factol_rhys_dupDec 05, 2003 19:01:02 | Wait, primemover, doesn't green steel have a property that it can hit any tanar'ri as if it were of the appropriate enhancement? And abyssal red steel does the same to baatezu. I was really sure of that, but I can't prove nor disprove it because I lent my Planewalker's Handbook to a friend. It doesn't say anything about this in the Arms and Equipment Guide, but then this wouldn't be the smallest change that WotC made when 3e came out. |
#5sildatorakDec 05, 2003 19:50:08 | IIRC, green steel didn't have any "can hit xxxx" properties, it was just lighter, faster, and did more damage. |
#6primemover003Dec 05, 2003 19:54:07 | Indeed Sildatorak! In fact many Barbazu had even traded in their green steel Glaives for Cold Iron ones to harm Tanar'ri more effectively (or at least gain 1/2 damage vs Tanar'ri with higher plus req's). Green Steel merely was sharper and lighter than other metals (faster speed factor, damage die was one step higher in 2e). |
#7zombiegleemaxDec 05, 2003 22:13:29 | So Tanar' ri have their own Red Steel? I was always a fan of the Mystaria setting(I just love the idea of a hollow planet), and I remember the Savage Coast(Red Steel) part of the setting well. I wonder if the two metals are related? |
#8zombiegleemaxDec 05, 2003 23:35:26 | I was disapointed by A&EG's treatment of Greensteel. It costs 2,000 gp, and only gives a +1 bonus to damage. So a masterwork greensteel weapon is identical to a +1 weapon in all respects, except that a +1 weapon beats DR, can have additional enchantments (without paying for itself again and losing the point of making it magical in the first place, like greensteel would). The only advantage of greensteel would be if you were to fight near the spire a lot. Does this bother anyone else? I say either the bonus to damge isn't big enough (after all, hasn't it been said that a bonus to damage is actually worth less than a bonus to attack, and we only have to pay +300 gp for that), and if it doesn't get bigger then it ought to apply to magical weapons too. I like the concept of greensteel, and I have had a few of my 3E characters use it, but only because I'm a sucker for stuff like that. IIRC in 2E greensteel upped the damage dice of a weapon (at least in Torment it did). I know that can be really unblancing in 3.5, but I think what they ended up doing was over compensating (they do that a lot these days, ECL anyone?) |
#9gerothianDec 06, 2003 0:22:28 | tanar'ri red steel and mystaran red steel are two seperate metals. mystaran red steel is also called cinnabryl steel. i made a LONG list of adnd gaming metals. i collected around 290 metals for game playing, some from official material, some from actual gems and minerals books and some from unoffical sources and hers my list of gaming metals that i made METALS * - #10primemover003Dec 06, 2003 1:14:52 | :heehee Too much time on his hands... I agree that only a +1 to damage is pretty lame for 2,000gp. I'd have it either add +1 to the critical range (it does make a blade sharper) or up the critical multiplier one place. |
#11zombiegleemaxDec 08, 2003 14:55:21 | Baatorian green steel has the same properties of cold iron. I've seen that somewhere in official sources, or in an official response... Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly where. |
#12zombiegleemaxDec 09, 2003 4:33:03 | I have Baatorian Green Steel give a natural +1 enhancement modifier and increase the critical threat range by one point. For that it's worth a price modifier of 2000 for weapons with a x2 or 19-20/x2 crit modifier and 3000 for weapons with a x3 or better crit modifier. |
#13spliskamatyshakJan 01, 2011 14:35:36 | Use the Baatorian Green Steel from Tyrants of the Nine Hells, page 99. The damage bonus stacks with magical enhancement and incurs only 1000 gp additional cost. |
