I seem to recall from somewhere that Fiends (and, possibly, all Outsiders) in Ravenloft 3e (as well as in previous editions) have lich-like phylacteries which house their life-forces.

I am currently preparing an adventure for some of my players, and it involves finding such a phylactery (or more than one, if t gets loopy).

However, I cannot find any reference to what that phylactery doesn, nor even a passage stating that they in fact exist. I've read through the RL3e passage on 3

Is this a figment of my imagination? A 2e relic I picked up somewhere and crossed over? A popular non-canon interpretation? Am I just overlooking it?

I would be very thankful to anyone who could quote a page number. :D

Try Van Richten's Guide to Fiends or the athologized version in the Monster Hunter Compendium 3. Much talk of phylactery.

Van Richten's Arsenal has some info on fiend phylacteries.

[does a quick lookup] Surprisingly, no! Then again, the only mention of the lich's phylactery in RCS is that it grants the lich fast healing.

So... not all fiends (or outsiders) have them--which makes perfect sense in the case of outsider familiars, as the "master" is their anchor to the plane.

But what happens if the familiar's master dies? Do they *poof* get a phyalctery or do they stay without?

I think they continue to exist as an independant creature, but if they survive the shock of their master's death.
Liches can survive sans phylactery, it just means if they die then it's permanent. Only stores soul/essence when body is unavailable.
So why would there pets be different?

In CotN: Demons it said that Quist, an imp, was too insignificant a fiend to warrent a phylactery of his own.
