#1zombiegleemaxDec 17, 2003 18:53:45 | Is anyone playing Masque of the Red Death with the 3rd Edition? What would you recommend for a campaign: 3.5 D&D or d20 Modern? I loved the MotRD setting when it first appeared; in fact, it single-handedly rekindled my interest in DnD. I had moved on to other game systems, and found 2nd Ed. to be to cumbersome for fantasy RPGs, but the 2nd edition was somehow quite suited to MotRD... at least enough to get me to play. But now that 3rd edition is premier system (and deservedly so), I'd like to try an update of the Red Death. The latest issue of Dragon has a Red Death article in it, and it seems to use D&D for its base, though I have never seen a d20 Modern article in Dragon -Dungeon, yes, but not Dragon.... Anyway... What are the thoughts of you guys? Obviously, both options will require some customization, but which would you start with? |

#3zombiegleemaxDec 18, 2003 18:18:41 | If you want something now the RPGA Living Death campaign uses a "hybrid" d20 system that is free to download from livingdeath.org. Put together by Claire Hoffman it was her (rather successful IMO) attempt to reconcile 3.0 (and now 3.5) rules with the old kits and features from the 2E version of masque. Thank you Claire Hoffman! Incidently Claire Hoffman is part of the design team for the new Masque along with Rucht Liliavet (hope I spelled that right) who I know is also active in the campaign (and unsurprisingly has written two of the very best mods for the LD). -Eric Gorman |

#5zombiegleemaxDec 19, 2003 13:21:25 | We've been fans of MotRD for years - Nicky wrote the Ravenloft Guide to Transylvania for it some time ago. When we broached the idea to the management at Arthaus/White Wolf, they thought it would be a good addition to the Ravenloft line, and since it was included in the license, we were able to get the go-ahead to release it for D&D 3.5. We enlisted Claire Hoffman and Rucht Lilavivat (Rucht actually suggested Claire) from the current Living Death RPGA campaign as well as veteran freelancers and Ravenloft enthusiasts Peter Woodworth, Andrew Scott & Carla Hollar. In addition, we have Harold Johnson from the original Ravenloft team contributing to the book! If you have any more questions on Masque or any other Ravenloft matters, just post them on the "From the Developers Thread" (forthcoming) and we'll try to answer them as promptly as we can. We are currently in the process of moving, so please be patient as we juggle packing up a household with day-jobs and our work on Ravenloft. We'll try to check in to this board at least once a week, if we can. Take care! Jackie Cassada and Nicky Rea, Ravenloft Developers |

I really like it and wished they had done other locations bits based on the old classics (I also remember being rather dubious beforehand thinking it had a good chance of going awry in some other post-Stoker interpretation of Dracula). Cool. -Eric Gorman |
