Although the medium-magic, whole grain oat feel of greyhawk has great appeal for me I'm having a hard time getting a good mental picture of the current Greyhawk world. I've read a timeline and sorta know the big events, however i'm in an online game where we're in greyhawk and i'd like to have some broad sweeping generalizations about what nations, groups, and such that would be common knowledge for a 1st level mage. I don't exactly know what part of the world we're at (it hasn't really been defined yet) but any help would be appreciated.

ps. I know, I know, I need to get that gazateer thingy...

I triple the above sentiment. If a player is serious about playing in GH, they are best served by obtaining The Living Greyhawk Gazeteer by Holian, Mona, et. al.

Delglath beams with pride at the fact that his minions brainwashing has finally held and that they now all repeat the same mantra.

Now, you would also be best served by downloading the manuscript that I have a link in my sig for... you shall do nicely as a future minion, methinks :D

While the Gazetteer is a great piece of updated work, you should consult your DM about what materials he would like you to review. That way you dont stumble on to any spoilers. There is also a large amount of classic Greyhawk material to draw from that is easily downloaded from the web. Follow thislink.

Cheers!

Good Gaming!

Well, in light of the fact that the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer is the only survey of the Greyhawk setting that's even remotely new, it's not a great leap . . .

Besides, it's good advice.

I'd agree, though, that you should start with your DM. Then, if your DM approves, get the LGG. After that, if you feel inclined to do some digging, I'd also encourage you to try to pick up some of the older materials that, like the LGG, provide a survey of the setting, although you should bear in mind that, unless your DM is playing in a historical period reflected in one of those older products, the LGG is what will reflect the current state of the setting.

Report to the Chamber of Eternal Indescribable Pain Torture and Incessant Tickling, minion! You shall pay for your insolence and learn that I, Delglath the Undying, am your one, true master!

Somehow the two concepts; delgath the undying and tickling, seem to me as ideas that should never be used together again. At least for the sake of keeping us from being a buncha crazy-go-nuts

Careful Staad, (hmmm Staad, didn't I once run fleeing from a relative of yours in a misty land) its delgLath. Misspelling his name can make him coming looking for you. Talking about him stokes his already sizeable Ego. He'll have to start his war of conquest soon, his head is outgrowing the city he rules.

Hmph, some heroic adventurer you are, you can't even remember the name of the villians. It's STRAHD, not Staad.

My dear, ignorant, small-minded, pathetic, weak mortal friend... the conquest has already begun. It began when I was reborn in my magnificent new form by my Lord Ivid and was enlightened by the wisdom and guidance of Nerull.

The Great Kingdom will rule once more, and you and your lame band WILL fall before the might of my undead horde.

Thelma: Jeepers! That Delglath fella is spooky! Let's head up to his spooky old castle in the Mystery Machine and meddle with his evil plans!

Shaggy: Like, I don't know, Thelma - crazy undead clerics of Nerull give me the creeps! I think Scoob and I will just make a run for the border and pick up some tacos.

Scooby: (licks chops) Racos!

Fred: Oh no you don't, we're gonna go check out Delglath's creepy castle! C'mon, gang!

(Delglath peers through a crystal ball at the meddlesome kids and their gluttonous dog, wringing his bony hands with feverish glee.)

Delglath: Yes, come, insipid, meddlesome kids! Come and provide fresh flesh for my ravenous minions! Moowahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa!!!!
