This is probably pretty dumb, but how do you pronounce Malocchio's name? I've always assumed it rhymes with Pinocchio.

That's how I pronounce it too.

I pronounce it like that too.

Hmm....conventional wisdom, if I'm not mistaken, is that he's the son of the Gentleman Caller, but perhaps he's actually....Maligno's brother who became a real boy!

I think it would rhyme with Pinocchio too. I tend to say it as mal-oak-EE-oh.

I've always pronounced it mal-ock-EE-oh, reminiscent of the deity Moloch, and perhaps hinting at Malocchio's fiendish origins. But I could be reading too much into it. It certainly is spelled like it rhymes with Pinocchio.

I'm in the "ock" camp if only because I personally *don't* want it to rhyme with something I (and most players) am most familiar with as a cartoon character. Okay that's not quite fair. I loved Disney's Maelificent as the arch-typal witch, and as a kid loved their version of Sleepy Hallow. But Malocchio doesn't really gain anything by evoking Pinocchio (or does he?)

PCs snickering comments like being the son/brother of Maligno is something I try to cut out.

I've always pronounced it 'malochio', with the ch making a ch sound, instead of k. Of course, I don't really have anything to base this off of, but that's how I did it.

The Italian for "eye" *is* "occhio", hence Mal-occhio == evil eye.

I thought I had read somewhere that Pinocchio translates to something like "wooden eye" or "pine eye" but I could be quite wrong.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news for those who dread the idea of Malocchio sounding like a cartoon, but it does rhyme with the wooden boy. Growing up around a lot of older Italian relatives you hear the name thrown around a fair bit. Yep, we're a superstitious lot - I always have to catch myself from knocking on wood when I tell one of my patients a bit of information (just doesn't inspire confidence in your doctor for some reason ). If it cheers anyone up, read the original Pinocchio - it's a pretty creepy little story and Pinocchio is a vicious brat.

I do remember that he squashed the cricket at the first possible opportunity. :D

Were my guesses about what the name Pinocchio might translate to even close?

Brandi, you got it pretty darn close. It means "Eye of the Pine" - basically it refers to the "knot" you get in a piece of wood.
