As distinct from the movie thread. ;)

The Epic of Gilgamesh- I should think this a fairly obvious choice, especially if you see the Tyr region as largely Mesopotamian in culture.

The Iliad- More ships and sailing than you'll find, but good for large-scale, total war with heroes assuming a prominent role.

Any histories you deem relevant

Medea

Any other suggestions?

Anyone ever read The Faded Sun by CJ Cherryh?
Awesome books. Has some Darksun flavor, especially the first and last books.

The last book takes the characters to a world that is ANCIENT. I mean, has had a civilization for tens of thousands of yeafs. The whole planet is dusty and alsmot waterless, after eons of winds erosion and drying.

CJ's one of my favorite authors. I based a tribe of elves on her aliens. Juggling swords. Cool stuff.

Absolutely cannot ignore Edger Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series. Starting with A Princess of Mars.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

I mentioned this one on the movie thread, since I hadn't gotten to this one yet.

I am advocating the book (in which NO ONE has a happy ending) NOT the Disney smish.

A good fact based book about the desert like Time-Life or National Geographic. You will learn all sorts of things like what causes sand dunes, how a sand storm occurs, what types of oasis there are, what food is available, how caravans are prepared and desert customs such as the Mongols never eat vegitables and most towns in the desert had some sort of special walled area for caravaners to rest during the night. I just finished a book, which seemed like a High School textbook about deserts. It will help you understand the desert environment and ultimately Dark Sun.

Herotodus accounts should be interesting as well as ancient Egyptian accounts of trade and foreign relations. There was one account of a state funded trade mission into Lebanon to acquire wood, something the Egyptians lacked.
