Ok, just a quick yes or no question this time, A) is the Scarlet Brotherhood, according to the LGG trying to gain influence of the Pomarj and B) if not, is it too big a stretch if I said they were?

I don't think it's too big a stretch to assume they'd want some influence, but still, I don't really know what exactly they'd DO with the Pomarj, unless they want to use the orcs to invade the Uleks...but didn't that already fail when the orcs tried it?

It's been a long time since I looked at the modules so I don't know whether I'm making this up, but I'd say the Scarlet Brotherhood has had an interest in the Pomarj for a long time. I seem to recall a monkish charater in the Slave Lords series who was on the Council of the Slave Lords. I always assumed he represented the Scarlet Brotherhood and their machinations in the Flannaess.

Correct, and Brother Kerin was again present in the 2E module Slavers. It was also mentioned that the Brotherhood subsidized the temple of Beltar (a Suel goddess popular with humanoids) there. So they continue to try and use the Pomarj as one of their many tools.

The Scarlet Brotherhood and the Pomarj share a few major interests. First is their love for slaves, the Scarlet Brotherhood preferring the strong backs of dwarves. What better dwarf than the Pomarj's enemies in the Principality of Ulek? These two countries also have strong influence over the seaways between the Sea of Gearnet and the Azure Sea. As stated in LGG the Scarlet Brotherhood is an unproven ally. The vessels of Scarlet Brotherhood have been noted in the port city of Blue and Highport where the Scarlet Brotherhood would obviously be trading their "goods" back and forth from the captured city of Scant. Noted in Slavers it is said that the Scarlet Brotherhood doesn't fly their own flags in Highport which strengthens the secrecy of the partnership between the two evil countries. There is also the alliance of Beltar priests and Earth Dragon priests such as in the Ruins of Cantona found in Slavers. There are temples in Highport dedicated to Beltar and also the Olman god Mictlantecuhtli worshipped in the Amedio jungles and Hepmonaland. The Star Cairns has rich history connected to the Suel and the Pomarj is working loosely with the Derro that dominate that area. This would be a mutual interest between the Pomarj and the Scarlet Brotherhood.

The best information is on page 119 of Slavers where it states that the Scarlet Brotherhood is ready to defend their interest in the Pomarj port cities threatening to place a choke hold on trade from the Free City of Greyhawk to the Densac Gulf.

Does this mean that I have to start incorporating the Scarlet Brotherhood into my Pomarj based campaign?

I also seem to recall that the Living Greyhawk Gazeteer mentioning somewhere that the Horned Society might have a hand in the goings on in the Pomarj. Am I just crazy or can someone back this up?

Hey Burgoyne.

Rumors place the headquarters of the contemporary Horned Society on the coasts of the Pomarj. LGG 159. However, other locations are also rumored.

On Greytalk, Gary Welsh, once posted a bit on a Horned Knight, who stalked the ruins of the Wild Coast (after its fall to Turrosh Mak). This figure may have been connected to the Horned Society, or even a Hierarch him(?)self.

Regarding your first question, incorporating the Scarlet Brotherhood into the Pomarj can be a nice move. Various versions hold alternately that the SB is the secret power behind the Slavers, that the SB is even behind Turrosh Mak; that the SB vies for power with the Mak, but underestimated his guile; that the SB power base in the Pomarj has long been destroyed -- but that its agents are permitted to enter the port cities; that the SB allies militarily with the Pomarj; et cetera.

Have fun!

Introducing the SB has another consequence. It gives the orcish hoard someone to blame when plans go awray.
IMC, the Hateful Wars were restarted and the orcs were forced out of Ulek, Suss and most of the Wild Coast. I have an Evil group of PC's serving Mak, and they have been able to blame SB factions for most of these defeats. They have kept Morale high so far, but are now faced with two different threats. Fighting a Dwarf, Elf, Human invasion (lead by Turin Deathstalker), and a three way civil war against the SB's forces and a group following Quij, who want to abandon the Pomarj and join Rary and Robilar in the dessert. Lots of challenges for the PC's.

There is a lot of trafficing from the Woolly Bay, up the Selintan River, to the Lake Nyr Dyv. Iuz, the Pomarj, the Scarlet Brotherhood, and the Rhennee to name a few have major interests in their "goods" being shipped to and fro. With the Shield Lands being a conquered domain, I could see the lords Iuz has placed in the Horned Society area dipping their hands in the profits being so close and having use of the Veng and Ritensa River flowing from Molag and Fellreev Forest. There is also a link to the Cairn Hills again with the Horned Society lands. There is a rare gem called Dweornite found in Iuz the Evil Accessory. It's powers are basically that when crushed and dissolved it can yield potions, empathic effects, planar travel, and even divinatory nature. Some of the gems also allow mages to regain spells already cast during the day. Sages say that these gems and the dweomerstones of the Cairn Hills, and even ioun stones are all related and highly sought by Rary. Dweornite are tear-shaped, semi-opaque, blue-white stones, and found in totally unpredictable subterranean locations. (quoted from Iuz the Evil)

One last note about possible connections is that the rumor found in Atlas of the Flanaess in the From the Ashes boxed set states that one or more unnamed Hierarches escaped the Blood-Moon Festival slaughter and fled to the Fellreev Forest or elsewhere according to told the rumor. This could leave the door open for one of them fleeing into the humanoid infested Pomarj. The Horned Society and the Pomarj are highly humanoid clanned based and could possibly have family connections for refuge.
