#1darthsylverDec 28, 2003 16:16:13 | Shugi has recently posted on the Nexus my latest versions of the Wizard of High Sorcery, and the Messenger of the Heavens. If you guys & gals could look them over and give me some feedback I would appreciate it. Thanks all. |

#3rooksDec 29, 2003 17:41:03 | Some honest critique: This is, on the whole, well done. MY major concern is that there isn't a lot of bang for buck spread out over 20 levels. A character would have more benefit to take a level or two after completing the test, then jump into a different Prestige Class that offers more bang. Examples include the Elemental Savant, Blood Witch, and War Mage (my personal favorite!). When compared against the DLCS WoHS, this one is slightly less powerful - which, if you were shooting for that, you've accomplished it perefectly. However, as a viable option to player's beyond the Concentration bonuses (optionally acquired through Skill Focus and Greater Skill Focus), and the extra Spell Slots, there isn't a great deal of incentive to take this Prestige Class. However, I will say that the Spell Slot ability is very cool and I personally commend you on that tidbit of creativity. This Prestige Class shows a great deal of maturation in your work! A tad underpowered, but overall a great effort. Keep up the good work my man! Now, the Messenger of Heavens. First, let me say that this one struck me as a terrific amount of fun to play. There was a lot of times that while reading this I was struck by the fact that a whole story could be built around an ability. Aside from that, this is ver creative. However, on the whole, it is possibly a slight bit overpowered. When this Prestige Class acquires abilities, it gets them whole and complete with almost no scaling. This potentially unbalances abilities such as Divine Creation and Divinity. On Divine Creation, I love the concept. However, I believe that spreading it out further and with less impact would be a better options. After all, this Prestige Class seems to represent special members of the clergy, not organic magic-item factories. The very ability itself seems a little out of place; it would be more suited on a Prestige Class suited to making and using holy magic items than a Divine Messenger. I would either remove the ability or scale it back: Start the ability earlier so that the Divine Messenger only pays 3/4 the cost in XP as normal in making an item. Interval the ability so that somewhere higher in their progression they pay only 1/4 the cost and leave it there. Divinity is a really cool ability, however I feel that loading down a Prestige Class with every and any domain offered by a deity is unbalanced. On one point, different deities offer different amounts of domains. Some have 3 domains, while others have 4. This means that a Divine Messenger with a resourceful deity is a tad more powerful than one with a deity whose domain portfolio is less plentiful. Perhaps a better way to approach this would have been to let the character at some point swap one of the domains he currently has for a different one offered by his deity. Just some suggestions. As I mentioned previously, these are both great works. I'm especially thrilled by the Divine Messenger and I definitely see real potential there. Keep up the work my man. My apologies in advance if any of my criticism seems over-done or harsh. Peace. |
#4baron_the_curseDec 29, 2003 18:28:27 | Well, Rook pretty much got it all. I would suggest bringing down the WoHS to 10th Level. Both Prc are pretty cool. |
#5darthsylverDec 29, 2003 22:39:47 | Yes the WoHS is a little under powered. Compared to my first version of eth WoHS it is like a sweet tea without sugar. The first version essentially made a WoHS into a specialist in 5 schools and I was trying to avoid that this time around. As before the first version was a seriously overpowered WoHS and I was trying to avoid that this time. From the way the class, so far, has been received I feel that the class can hold it's own for now. I may add some more benefits to it but I am not sure. With the Messenger again this is my second version. As Rooks stated the Divine creation was suggested to be a little less than what it is now by Shugi. As I had already discussed and changed a few ideas I was a little reluctant to make to many more changes. But this is one that has come up and I will be looking at it. The ability was not designed to represent magic-item making factories but to represent the character's wisdom from experience and a connection with his god. He is not meant to be making magic items every day and for every simple reason, certainly not simply because he can. But as players are usually the people who use prestige classes, "Power Corrupts, and Ultimate Power Corrupts Absolutely." As far as the access with the domains, and the availability of domains based on your god, who you serve is well who you represent. I was trying to represent the same ability as presented in teh DLA where certain clerics were allowed access to certain "spheres" and denied access to other "spheres." I once tried to deny access to all other domains not of the chosen deity but that was a bit excessive, especially when only one deity had the "healing" domain and dening access to this domain was not well received. Thanks to everyone for the feedback. These are two classes that I have always felt represented a huge portion and feel of the dragonlance setting and I wanted to ensure that I cast a fair and accurate light on them. |
#6stunsporeDec 30, 2003 3:55:03 | If you're representing connection between god and wisdom, how about reducing XP cost for spells, not items. And also to use divine type spells such as Divine Favour and stuff that boosts the cleric in a spiritual (with usually some physical benefits) way? As for the WOHS, I liked it. |
#7darthsylverDec 30, 2003 12:08:09 | Stunsspore - The messenger does have a reduced cost for xp for spells at 10th level. I wanted an item creation type ability because in alot of stories and myths, legends and such the "Church" provides the prodigal hero with a weapon or item that is specifically designed to help the hero even if the hero does not know it automatically. |
