I've gotten to thinking again, and digging up my old Dragonlance MM. I want to know, since magic is such a big part of this setting, what roles familiars can play in the setting, and what type of creatures we'd choose.

For regular familiars:

Kingfisher
Wari (a type of small ostrich)
Seagull (for all those mariner mages)

I'd like to make a mention that I wouldn't mind seeing more "new world" creatures here, because that was always some of the fun of dragonlance. Creatures such as bison, caribou, and other flora and fauna not found in Europe. I also wouldn't mind animals that have never existed on earth. A beetle the size of your fist for example for those desert dwelling mages.

Now for Improved Familiars.

Kodragons

Wizer's Turban - That thing in dragon's bluff that gave Lucy a metamagic feat. I think this is a handy thing to use a familiar slot for. Take away scouting and other enhancements to the character, and just let them metamagic something. Could also be useful as a "Familiar Object" if you don't beleive it is alive.

gnomish constructs

kani dolls

Skyfishers - intelligent and larger kingfishers, good for combat.

New idea: Familiar Object

This would be rules to give a magical item some abilities as a familiar. Enhanced intelligence, a movement rate, and an independent attack. This I think would especially be useful with the free magical item that WoHS get.

Normal Familiars:

Goatsucker birds
Herring, Octopus, Squid, Angel fish - for Dimrenesti and Dargonesti mages

Enhanced Familiars:

The Puffball - we've always wanted one, ever since we found out that they reproduced! "Nothing like his father, that one!"

I think we can all agree, that for games with a light hearted contrast, or with kender sorcerers and wizards that whacky familiars are best. A minature template would perhaps be excellent for this type of thing. Hmm... a minitaur familiar. ;)

I'd like to concentrate on mainstream familiars though, that can be used by serious gamers as well as silly ones.

As for the puffballs, I think that was a Lantern Archon myself.
