Maurezhi LA?

Jan 04, 2004 17:05:24 I tried this in the "Monster Lair" forum, but I didn't get any help, so I thought I'd try with a more planar crowd. The Maurezhi from the Field Folio. What would you say its Level Adjustment would be?

Jan 04, 2004 20:15:55 Ugg. The Maurezhi's devour ability is at once both a blessing and a curse. I mean it can only advance by way of the devouring, seems to be limited in its HD at 20, but yet also can advance extremely quickly if it can kill its victims and eat their corpses.

I'm wretched with numbers, so I can't help much in terms of giving it a numerical LA ala Savage Species. I honestly wouldn't let a player use it because of the devour ability. And I'd be tempted at 20 HD to make them either not advance or be advanced to another Tanar'ri subtype by a superior. (The Barghest is another critter with wierd special abilities that would make me loathe to let a player use it for a character).

Was this a hypothetical question or do you have a player wanting to use one for a PC?

Jan 04, 2004 21:03:55 More of a hypothetical. I'm thinking right now of just a basic one, without any victims yet, and maybe houserule some limit for it. Really, they're just my favorite fiend and I always toyed with the idea of making a character of one, mostly just for fun, but with the faint hope that he'd make it into some high-powered just-for-fun-let's-play-monsters Planescape campaign.

So if any of you numbers guys want a challenge, step right up.

Jan 07, 2004 14:41:34 Just in case you were wondering, according to Savage Species, Devour abilities just give temporary con bonuses to PCs - +2 for 24 hours per fresh corpse, IIRC (it says so under the monster class for the Barghest). Maybe using this alteration might make them more reasonable PCs, and help you assign an appropriate LA (sorry, I don't have FF ).

Jan 07, 2004 15:21:51 As another idea, they could be forced to devour corpses to gain levels, but only if they have enough experience to gain the next level.

When they do, their HD, BAB, natural armor, Str, and Int increase by 1. Then, as it advances, it gains damage reduction and SR like a good little fiend. Of course, then there's always its paralyzing claws and spell-like abilities, which include some nasty ones at will...
