I'm writing an adventure for my new 1st Edition campaign. I wish to locate it in Greyhawk, and it takes place on a contested border between a good and evil nation, preferably one at war. Ideally this border will be on or near a body of water, either a lake or a river. I am currently waiting for my 1E Greyhawk campaign box to show up from E-Bay, so I don't have the maps or backgrounds yet. Where do you suggest I place the adventure?

Not if he's using the 1e Greyhawk, it hasn't. The Greyhawk Wars would've never happened, Chendl would've never been taken, so the lands of Iuz, whilst an evil nation, bordering a good nation, with a body of water nearby, is not, and I believe never has been, at war before circa 586 C.Y.

In addition to Furyondy vs. Iuz you have:

Nyrond vs. Great Kingdom
Shield Lands or Urnst vs. Bandit Kingdoms
South Province vs. Iron League
Furyondy or Shield Lands vs. Horned Society
Zief vs. Ekbir is oft hinted at
Keoland vs. Sea Barons is not a stretch
Ulek vs. Pomarj
Ratik vs. Bone March

There have been many wars between good and evil nations throughout the Flaneass's history.

Northern Highfolk of the western bank of Whyestil Lake.
At the time of the 83 box set, Iuz is not openly at war with anybody, but combat between his minions and the people of Highfolk Valley does occur. Also, if you have access to early Dragon magazines, there were several articles dealing with military action across the Flanaess that indicate Iuz does have invasion plans for the area.

Thanks everyone for the help!

Here's a quick rundown of the plot: A good warcamp manages to capture an incredibly important (and notoriously vile) enemy commander. He has been struck unconscious (by some form of powerful magic?) and suffers from numerous wounds. When the forces of good are able to bring him back to consciousness he will be a valuable source of information, but they must wait for a magic-user/cleric of sufficient power to arrive from the capital to remove the curse.

Unfortunately, this evil general is withering away. A night hag (who is actually in cahoots with the enemy) has been riding the general every night, and soon will possess his soul. The good warcamp cannot spare the men to find and kill the hag (who's lair in on the nearby "Isle of Bells"), so they enlist the player characters.

I think that Whyestil Lake (or one of the rivers feeding it) is perfect for this adventure. Now I just need figure out who the best choice of good guy is.

And I'll have to check my Dragon Archives. Thanks for the suggestions!

Hey Wheggi, others.

You noted playing 1e, but when is your campaign set? Do you plan to include the Greyhawk Wars? Even if you don't, early sources described armed conflict between the Horned Society, the Bandit Kingdoms, and the Shield Lands.

Your villain might be a hierarch of the Horned Society. The heroes' patron might be a Knight of the Holy Shielding, such as Valdaresse Sharn (described in the City of Greyhawk boxed set, on page 73), who as a paladin can remove disease (which might be inadequate given what night hags do in 1e). However, Valdaresse "radiates a half-strength protection from evil 10' radius" -- which might ward off the 'hag (or anger her enough to leave the Ethereal Plane in an attempt to murder the young paladin (and the PCs of course).

Hi all,

You also have the campaigns the Duke of Tenh against the Bandit Kingdoms and the Hold of the Stonefist.

Just my 2 cents,

Yeow! I think you meant Sea Princes. :D

Another great location, if you are going to use the timeline post-Greyhawk Wars would be the Domain of Greyhawk/Pomarj border in the Wild Coast.

Tehn/Bandit Kingdoms was another site of border conflict pre-Greyhawk Wars.
