I wasn't sure if this was the correct forum to post this, but here it is anyway. I have been playing a character that worships Vecna for a while now, and recently he's been getting more involved into researching the history of the deity.

I never played directly in the Greyhawk setting, but as far as I know Vecna comes from that world. All I know is that he was some sort of demi-god lich that was eventually trapped in Ravenloft. Afterwards he ascended to godhood and fled the demiplane of Dread, apparently causing some trouble in Sigil (from the Planescape setting).

Could anyone here help me with more information about Vecna? It's really crucial to my character. I don't know, I'm interested about anything. Appearances in adventure modules, his history in Greyhawk, etc. What I really need is a summary of his past. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing I'd do, if I were you, is click on the "search" button located near the upper right of the page, and search this forum for "Vecna." I think what you're looking for has probably been posted here before. However, I'm not sure how long ago, or how often the pages here get pruned. (You could also widen the search to include the Planescape forum, or just search all of them.)

Beyond that, I'm not going to be much help. I've heard about the modules you're talking about, but I don't have them.

The best resources are the commercially published matrerial. I think anyone's D&D collection is well served with the following:

Vecna Lives 1991
Vecna Reborn 1998
Die Vecna Die! 2000

You'll have to figure out which information regarding Vecna best suits your campaign. But the above references are great sources. Good luck.

Don't forget the excellent graphic novel, Vecna: Hand of the Revenant. There's also a Canonfire! article by Erik Mona called "Vecna's Realm": http://www.canonfire.com/htmlnew/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=220

A long time ago their was a nasty wizard named Vecna. Who got ripped to shreds by his lieutenat named Kas. Now Vecna has two famous body parts.

LOL. Very funny, Argon. You answered that question well.

I have not read Vecna: Hand of the Revenant, but I trust Robb's judgement. I can attest for Vecna's Realm at Canonfire! - that's a nice little piece by Mr. Mona.

Rikutatis, you'll find that Vecna is associated with the Ur-Flan. Some say he studied magic from the elves and from forgotten Suel writings. He betrayed the elves and eventually destroyed most, if not all, of their cities in the northwestern Flanaess. The desolation of the Bright Desert is atrributed to his magic, in some accounts. And let's not forget the whole lich thing he had going on.

I'll second that!

And I'll second that too. Or third, or fourth, or whatever.... ;)

I don't know how reliable any information about a God of Trickery would be anyway! How exactly would a cleric research the history of the diety? Wouldn't the deity just hide anything he didn't like?

Thanks a lot for the links and the information. I'll certainly make good use of it.

How exactly would a cleric research the history of the diety? Wouldn't the deity just hide anything he didn't like?

The character (it's a sorcerer, not a cleric) will go to the outer planes, to the plane of true neutrality known as the Outlands. The power of the deities is diminished in that plane. There rests the Great Library of Thoth. A traveler is supposed to find the answer to anything there, if he has the years to look long enough. (This is from the old Planescape setting)
You see, the character is somewhat obsessed with all this and more than a bit insane. It's a solo campaign.

Since we're on the subject, I saw an interesting reference to Vecna in the latest Dungeon magazine. In the description and stats for Evard (an awesome Critical Threat btw), it mentioned that the ruins of Vecna's stronghold lie buried beneath the Rushmoors. I think that whole statement itself was far more compelling than the whole Evard article (even though it was particularly timely since my home campaign is currently set in Bissel).

I'm gonna go ahead and lean in the direction of saying Vecna was Ur-Flan based on this placing of his tower. It makes perfect sense since that part of the world is a great haven for the Flan peoples. It's also nicely between the Lortmils, Barrier Peaks, and Crystalmists which means that if the Occluded Empire were to be located within it would be quite defensible from the Baklunish Empire, the Suel Imperium, and the Oeridian tribes.
