#3darthsylverJan 16, 2004 22:25:26 | A citadel is a fortress that is kinda like a tower or castle. |
#4zombiegleemaxJan 17, 2004 8:43:39 | Okay thanks. |
#5zombiegleemaxJan 21, 2004 18:31:30 | there are also the "flying citadels" which i believe are citadels that have been ripped out of the ground and made airborne by wizards. |
#6zombiegleemaxJan 22, 2004 14:32:58 | Ah, yes that is it. Thank you! |
#7zombiegleemaxFeb 03, 2004 13:44:49 | There is a nice picture of a flying citadel on the DL4 9139 Dragons of Desolation Dragonlance adventure. It give a good idea at the awe a horse rider would get approching on of these! Lord Soth |
#8brimstoneFeb 03, 2004 14:08:50 | Actually...that's Derkin's Tomb...so I'm not sure how much that exactly qualifies as a "flying citadel." (as it really more "floats" than "flies"...and it's not exactly a citadel as it is a temple) There is always the cover of Knaak's The Citadel. |
#9zombiegleemaxFeb 03, 2004 14:13:46 | I see what you mean. In our group we always refered to this picture as a guide to what the flying citadels looked like. Lord Soth |
#10ripjakFeb 03, 2004 17:39:24 | if your want to see a flying citadel check out the cover of the original 'Art of the Dragonlance' book. |
#11brimstoneFeb 04, 2004 9:49:20 | Um...Ripjak...that's the picture we're talking about. :D I guess it's a good enough representation...but I'm still holding to "it's not a 'flying citadel' it's a 'floating temple.'" ;) |
#12cam_banksFeb 04, 2004 10:05:03 | Originally posted by Brimstone No, that isn't Derkin's Tomb, it really is a flying citadel illustration. It just so happens that it's on the cover of the module which features Derkin's Tomb. Confusing, I know, but what can you do. Cheers, Cam |
#13brimstoneFeb 04, 2004 10:16:01 | Originally posted by Cam Banks Well...it's on the cover of DL4...and it's used by Karen Fonstad(sp) as Derkin's Tomb in the Dragonlance Atlas (her drawing is obviously the same "floating rock" as that which appears on the cover of DL4...which is the module about Derkin's Tomb) Why don't you think it's Derkin's Tomb? |
#14cam_banksFeb 04, 2004 10:24:55 | Originally posted by Brimstone Because it's outside, surrounded by flying dragons, underneath a huge lightning storm, and chasing a band of fleeing riders on horseback? Karen may have used it for the illustration in the Atlas, but I strongly suspect that's all after the fact. It doesn't look anything like the maps for DL4, and it's got the kind of menace the flying citadels are known for. I believe Dan Parkinson illustrated this with the intent that it was a flying citadel and TSR co-opted it for the cover of DL4, in other words. Cheers, Cam |
#15brimstoneFeb 04, 2004 10:52:25 | Keith Parkinson? I thought that was an Easly painting. Hmm... Ah well. EDIT: Just checked it...yeah, it is a Parkinson painting. |
#16iltharanosFeb 04, 2004 13:56:14 | Elmore's website has a cool looking painting of a flying citadel. Not sure if it's specifically a Dragonlance one, but cool-looking nevertheless. |
#17zombiegleemaxFeb 04, 2004 15:28:46 | it's not a 'flying citadel' it's a 'floating temple. This is the best single line I've seen on this board in a very long time. If you choose not to put it in your sig, do you mind if I do? |

#19ripjakFeb 04, 2004 20:53:14 | Brimstone - I just checked my copy of 'Art of..." and the title of the pic is "Flying Citadel by Parkinson". As for me not knowing that it is the same as the one on the original adventure - I guess I should get around to getting my hands on those one of these days :D |
