Draconian sorcerors?

I was reading through the DLCS again about the draconians and I was just wondering why an aurak and bozak have sorceror as a favored class and their levels stack.

Now I know the have innate understanding of magic and have always been able to cast spells, but when they were created, War of the Lance, sorcery wasn't even there yet. They cast spells by using spellbooks just like a wizard. And since the War of the Lance really wasnt that long ago, say maybe 80 years or so, there would still be many draconians still from that time.

The only thing I can even come close to thinking of how they are sorcerors now, is that every aurak and bozak went through the "soulforge" and became sorcerors once the Chaos War came. Somehow I find that hard to believe, but who knows. I always thought they just loss their innate magic during the Age of Mortals, just like every other wizard.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I think the idea there is that, yes the Sorcerer class was not available post-2nd Dragon War and pre-Chaos War because the level of chaoticly enhanced Greygem magic is at a minimum, but there are certain races who have such an innate magical ability, that they were always able to tap into Krynns ambient magic. It's in their blood, so to speak, so they don't need the amplification of said magic by the Greygem in order to use it.

Essentially, those races would mostly likely be dragons, fey creatures, and Irda. Now, all of these would also be able to use Wizardry once it became available post-2nd Dragon War...but they wouldn't need to...they could all be sorcerers as well.

So...draconians coming from dragons...and being magically imbued creatures anyway, they would be natural sorcerers and mystics.

That's my take on it anyway.

I agree with Brim on this.

Their spellcasting comes from their draconic blood, however it takes Dragons a long time before they learn to control their spellcasting. I don't have my MM on me but I'm sure the age catagory for spellcasting for dragons is at least Adult for some of the metalics. Also wild magic is extremely hard to teach to someone, even if they have the inborn talent.

It was a time of war, so rather than wait for their natural spellcasting to develop Tak had the black robes loyal to her use their innate attachment to wild magic as a kickstart to Wizardly power. Thus it was untill Chaos came, and with the coming of Chaos, wild magic was energized so to speak, not that this made it more powerful than Wizardly magic, just easier to tap into. It is little wonder that the spellcasters amongst the Draconians managed to harness the power in their blood that is their birthright. They discovered that they had the power of magic regaurdless of the gods. New generations of Aurak and Bozak found it easy to tap into the legacy of draconic magic.

Scorcery comes naturally to them now, as it possibly could have had Tak not had them trained as Wizards to better harness their power for her war.

At least that's how I explain it in my head for my campaign.
