Well met, fellow travelers of Krynn.
I, Micah Northwind, devout follower of Branchala and bardic sage extraordinaire, have long wandered across the face of Ansalon on a journey of knowledge and adventure.
During my extensive travels, I have listened to many a story about the War of the Lance, and the heroes of that War.
Here I shall present the Heroes of the Lance as they were before the War. Mind you, my knowledge is based as much on rumors as on actual facts. So what you will see here is only my image of them, the version I see in my mind.
First, I shall present to you the unwilling leader of the group, Tanis Half-Elven of House Solostaran of Qualinesti.

Notes:
The following books were used: Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Dragonlance Campaign Setting, Unearthed Arcana.
I use several variants from UA, so don't be afraid to ask if you don't understand a stat.
The version here is a player character version, thus the CR is propably a bit off.
These stats are based on the stats from the original modules. They might not correspond the books perfectly.

Seriously.

From the description of the thug variant class:
"Despite the name, not all thugs are mere hooligans—many are crafty veterans who use their knowledge of the streets to gain an advantage against their opponents."

So "thug" is just the name of the class.
And I know Tanis hasn't got "knowledge of the streets," but he's been Flint's business partner, so he should be a bit more crafty than the average fighter.

How about Ranger? I believe he's even described as one in the Chronicles.

I try to keep them as close to their original classes as possible. Besides, Riverwind is already the ranger of the group.
He was described as a hunter, not as a ranger.

If the official stats of Tanis make him a ranger, then I might consider changing his class.

Or, if he is all ranger...I could see him with a level or two, but not all. I mean, I remember in Autumn Twilight, Riverwind was hiding all the tracks and making sure their cave was hidden and that everyone was quiet. Tanis just shot his bow quickly, which is what Rapid Shot is good for, which he could easily get with his fighter feats or his ranger class abil.

He was never Described as a Ranger. But 1 lvl of Ranger wouldn't be to bad since he was good at surviving in the outdoors.

Tanis also knew how to speak Goblin. You forgot to add that to his languages.

As I said, these stats are based on the original ones. The original Tanis knew Common, Qualinesti, Hill Dwarf, and Plainsman, but not Goblin. And since he only has an Int of 12, he can only have one language on top of Common and Elven.

Or just spend a skill point or two for other languages.

Here is what I think Sturm should be. I am not going to write his whole stats up, just a few basics.

Sturm Brightblade

Level 5 Human Fighter

Feats:

Human: Honor-Bound
1: Exotic Prof-Bastard (if Brightblade is considered Bastard, if not, Imp Init)
1: Focus in Bastard or Two Hander
2: Combat Expertise (if going by his 1e stats of 14 INT)
3: Endurance or Great Fortitude
4: Specialization (Two Hander/Bastard)

This is a nice mix, and I think represents him well. He wasn't the brute that Caramon was, so Expertise is nice, and Endurance/Fortitudereflects his ability to continue on while injured, like in Autimn Twilight with the first fight with the "clerics."

Have fun with this, guys, and use whatever works best in your game. But for those willing to wait, all of the Heroes (plus the villains and many minor characters) will be available this August in the War of the Lance sourcebook.

I must confess I did a double-take when I saw Tanis with the Thug class from Unearthed Arcana--though now I see the logic behind the move.

I think that the best version of Tanis has 3 level of Ranger(with the Arcery Combat Style) and the rest Fighter. I haven't found any good prestige classes for him yet, but then I don't really have any fighter books. Which is why I want the Complete Warrior.

Can't do that. Using a variant where you either know a skill or you don't. If you know a skill, you always have max ranks in it. If I gave Tanis Speak Language, he'd just keep learning more and more languages.

I'll post Caramon pretty soon. I'm warning you now, his Str score will be... how to say this... absurd.

And Jamie...
I'll propably be using the official HotL stats as inspiration for my own stats (which will be used as actual PCs). Like what feats to give them, or changed classes and alignments (way too many lawful goods as it is).

Greetings fellow wanderers of Krynn.
On my journey of knowledge, I arrived in the town of Solace. And if there's a better place for information about the Heroes of the Lance, I don't know what it is! And just between you and me, that would be unnatural.
So I stopped by at the Tomb of the Last Heroes. Ah, the abundance of kender. I like kender. But after having my notes borrowed a dozen times, I decided to relocate to the Inn of the Last Home. And just between you and me, what is it with this town and the word "Last?"
You'll never guess who I met at the Inn. Okay so you guessed it. Palin Majere. Ah, it was so good to see him again (he did teach me in the Academy, you know).
And who would be a better source for information about the strongest of the Heroes, Caramon Majere, than his own son? I learned bunches! I got a pretty good picture of what that guy was like all those years ago.
Here's how I see Caramon Majere, the Caring Man from Solace.

Notes:
I used the Arms and Equipment Guide for this one. Aside from those mentioned above, that is.
Yes, I converted his old Str score of 18/63 into 20. So he's buff, sue me.

Caramon Majere
"Strength solves all problems."

Bracers of armor and actual armor don't stack with each other. They both provide an armor bonus.

*slaps self.
Duh, of course.

I'll switch his bracers and cloak to a ring of protection.
