#1xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 16, 2004 21:56:14 | Ok, I have begun putting up my Avangion rules on my website. I currently have the Overview and Stages 1 & 2 up. As always, these are subject to change as I clean them up & add the rest. Stages 3 & 4 will be done soon, and then the little writeup I have on the mystical Avangion Magic rules will be after that. Avangion Magic isn't as.... flashy or impressive as Dragon Magic, other than the nice side effect of them being able to cast in any terrain without worries... Avangion (Overview) Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4 I took the idea of Avangions sacrificing magical items from a concept I recall from the Tribe of One series, sort of a method to replace the requirement I have in the Defiler Metamorphosis spells for life energy. |

#3xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 16, 2004 22:03:06 | I was thinking that possibly the Avangion kinda becomes their own "Tree of Life" when it comes to gathering their magical energy, and eventually treats all terrains as "Lush". Maybe even can choose to give their energy to other spellcasters to help protect the plants in the area, similar to abilities that Druids and Clerics are given in 2E. |
#4PennarinFeb 16, 2004 22:10:54 | Where as the Tree of Life rule set gone anyway? It's not in the imageless doc... |
#5xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 16, 2004 22:12:19 | I dunno. I thought they still had the spell. They just didn't include it in a terrain type any more. I was assuming it would be treated as "lush" in the imageless doc. |
#6PennarinFeb 16, 2004 22:14:56 | Typo: Kern. Should be Kurn. Wasn't there also a conflict within the sources as to wheither Besteren was a preserver or druid... |
#7xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 16, 2004 22:17:26 | I keep doing that. I guess the few years I lived in Bakersfield, CA keep haunting me (Kern County). I'll have to correct it. You'll notice: I don't have rules for "accelerated" Avangion development - they have to go through the entire process, with no shortcuts. |
#8nytcrawlrFeb 16, 2004 22:21:36 | Fits with how Avangions are presented in the ToO series, Very slow process, much slower than the dragon process, but they are equal to power with dragons once they are done. |
#9PennarinFeb 16, 2004 22:31:31 | Typo: A preserver must make a Fortitude save after casting the metamorphosis spell, failure of this save means the defiler has died from the process. Typo: As there have been no other fae-type creatures on Athas[...] Typo: At first, they aren't strong enough to allow him fly. Can't wait for Avangion Magic. ;) |
#10xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 16, 2004 22:34:02 | I was increasing the XP requirements for the spells, cutting off the accelerated development techniques Dragons could use, and also adding in a list of items that could require entire quests (maybe even campaigns) to look for in order to complete each stage. I'm still working on getting the latter formulated. Those three parts make the Avangion a much more difficult, and potentially time-consuming process than that of a Dragon. But yea, I'm not taking *everything* from ToO. After all, the official concept is that Oronis discovered/invented the process, and it took him 1,000 years or so after he decided to stop his Dragon metamorphosis and redeem himself before he could begin. As he didn't do that until *after* the rebellion against Rajaat, that means he was already a Sorcerer-King before that happened, placing it about 2,000 to 3,000 years ago that he started (if it was immediately after he became the Sorcerer-King of Kurn, which I think that's not quite correct, I usually assume about 500-1,000 years of his rule as a Dragon King before he starts to repent. This means that Oronis has been undergoing the Avangion metamorphosis for about 1,000-2,500 years, a significantly shorter time than the other Sorcerer-Kings have been Dragons. Even so, I'm guestimating him to be at the beginning levels of the Stage-2 metamorphosis. Basically, he's been a *very* busy little bunny. |

I've come to realize (with both the dragon and avangion metamorphosis conversions I've done) that if I focus on the game statistics, I forget to fill in the little things.... like the hair color, skin color and eye color changes to an avangion.... dum de dum... |
#13nytcrawlrFeb 17, 2004 2:25:34 | Heh, happens to me all the time, which you have probably seen. Might want to rename your stage 3 link in your post from stage 2 to stage 3, hehe. Will take more of a gander tomorrow, but I'm liking what I see so far. |
#14xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 17, 2004 2:28:15 | Of course, the Stage-3 and Stage-4 Avangions currently don't exist on Athas.... As I feel Oronis is a mere Stage-2 Avangion (and really, just beginning that stage). I'd get the Stage-4 out tonight, but I need to actually crash, so I should have it up by tomorrow (most likely). I dunno if I like the way I have the magic items implemented for the epic spells at this time. I don't want to give specific names for the items, and want to permit a category-like effect which I have, and for the power to scale with the stages.... I just don't know if I have the requirements quite where I want them yet. Stage 3 is where it really starts to put "the hurt" on for the Avangion - with Artifacts being need to be located and then subsequently consumed as spell components. I'm sure you can imagine what the stage-4 items will consist of... |
#15xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 17, 2004 18:49:26 | Ok, Stage 4 is up. I've got to do up the Avangion Magic, as well as an Avangion Items page, then it will be complete. The latter page will detail the construction of the Avangion's tomb needed for the last stage metamorphosis spell. |
#16PennarinFeb 18, 2004 16:21:28 | DarkHelm.net, both forum and site, seems to be down. Xlor...??? |
#17xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 18, 2004 17:08:42 | Umm.... yea. I was updating some things on my server, and then it kinda lost it's network connectivity. I'm working on it right now. Sheesh, it's only been.... what..... 20 minutes |
#18nytcrawlrFeb 18, 2004 17:30:36 | It's like crack man, they can't get enough. :D |
#19xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 18, 2004 18:41:09 | I think my problem is this: I set up the Zend Performance Suite on my server, in an effort to speed up the web pages (since my server uses PHP a *lot*). however, after I set that up, all of a sudden, my server refuses to even consider using a virtual host. I can access my pages through my LAN IP's, but not through the named virtual hosts. Still working on it, hopefully, I'll have it going soon. |
#20xlorepdarkhelm_dupFeb 18, 2004 19:58:15 | Well, I got the server working again.... still haven't gotten the zend performance suite to work yet, but..... at least my server's going. |
