ok question about darksun

I love athas and darksun and prefer it to most of the other worlds but alas (or hoorah) its not 3e. Unfortunatly i have never been able to get large amounts darksun materials and now i am wondering if there is anywhere that contains the whole of the darksun history. Everything from creation to its most receint publications. I would really like to learn it like i learn the other worlds histories.

heh a rpg historian someone shoot me... or stab me in the face or other vital area

I can see that the literacy rate has dropped and continues to do so.

Or maybe that's the attention span?

Please show me, after getting to this message forum, through which you have to go through the "Other Roleplaying Worlds HQ", which has the following quote:
Dark Sun
To quote The Burnt World of Athas website, Dark Sun is "set on a desert planet where magic harms the environment, gods don't exist, priests pray to the Elements, and Psionics are commonplace."

That you didn't see the link in that quote that leads to athas.org. If you had gone to Athas.org, you would have seen that yes, there is rules for Dark Sun for (gasp) 3E. Well, technically it's for 3.5E, as they had relatively recently released the updated version.

Well, to answer your question, there is an official timeline.... one of the more recent posts here actually links to it. Further, SV Games sells PDF files of all the Dark Sun materials, and I have heard that eBay has dark sun books up on it from time to time. Please don't get too upset about my earlier statements... it's not directed to you personally, as it is more my own personal confusion when it comes to such things - I personally open and check every link, especially when I'm looking for information, and when people don't..... it baffles me.

Welcome to the community

...and Mach, I have my cookies hidden in a secret safe deposit box, buried somewhere in the sea of silt. You can't get them.

It was suggested before, but to reiterate, it would probably be a good idea to post a "Read Me" FAQ at the top of the boards. It doesn't even have to be long, basically just "Where can I find DS3/3.5? At athas.org." and "Where can I get DS material? At SV Games/eBay/half.com/Amazon.com."

Welcome aboard Lokiyn.

Errr . . . you'll have to excuse some of the more incesantly billigerent people here in these boards. Its just that, your not the first one to come along having missed the opener in the main message board listings about Athas.org. It happens, and really isn't as a big a deal as it some others *cough* *nyt, xlor, pen* *cough* make it out to be.

Don't worry though. After the innitial mandatory razzing about it, everyone here is pretty good about being open to opinions and ideas about Dark Sun. Give it a week or two and you'll be derailing threads with talk of space hamsters, smurfs, and cotton candy like the rest of us. Wow, come to think of it, its been a little while since we went off on a space hamster tangent . . . at last three or four days.

Oh yeah, Nyt's comment about that whole facial stabbing thing. Don't worry about it. Its only a virtual stabbing over the net. Only my dwindling neighbors have to worry about the real thing. Sure has been getting lonely on this block . . . might be time to move.

Oh yeah (again). Get that FAQ up! Sticky thread; expandable as more frequently flamable questions pop up.

Drats, all that and I never got around to answering your question.

There's nowhere (that I know of) online that has a detailed history of Athas. There is the timeline (see previous post for link), but its . . . tricky. Its not 100% accurate because the Dark Sun setting has more than a few inconsistancies in the published material. Many of the issues stem from variations between the RPG material and the novels, but some come from within the different RPG products themselves.

Your best bet is to start with the timeline, to get a general overview. Then, shell out a few bucks for some of the older DS products before jumping into the 'revised' setting material (updated timeline material, not revised as in 3.0 to 3.5; its all in 2E AD&D). You can pick up old DS material from any online auction site (like ebay) or from rpg community sites with buying/selling sections (like Enworld and RPGNow) if your a stickler for having the printed material. If you don't mind getting the stuff in electronic PDF format, head over to SVGames or RPGNow to buy the entire stock of material for DS in PDF format for under 250 bucks (at 5 us dollers each). The dark sun novels, while not award winning literature by any means, aren't so bad and do flesh out the DS setting quite well (though this is mainly where alot of discrepencies in the setting come from).

Hope that's the answer you were looking for, or that it at least helps a little bit. We'll save the facial stabbing for another day.

(P.S. I now recall where I came across the facial stabbing fetish. Hop on over to 8-Bit Theater for the comic strip based on Final Fantasy for more info on where this bizzare obsession came from.)

Mach is such a pussycat these days

Someone has to keep you kids in line ;)

Besides, if you chase them all away before they've become addicted to DS and space hamsters, you'll have no one left to punt, call strange names, ridicule for grevious splelihng mistakes, derail their thread with useless talk about grecko-roman sexuality, and other fun stuff like that.

Method to the Madness . . .

You know, I got a whole FAQ module on my site just dying to be used, maybe I can cook something up then add a link to my sig.

Then at least I can just post and say "Hey! Check the sig man/woman".

Yup, we need a easy to see FAQ/info thread. It's clear that the word on the DS revival is filtering out into the community and this is only going to increase exponentially when the crossover conversion comes out. I'd say again that it should be something collaborative between athas.org and the WizOs. And it should be soon

(Starting another thread on this...)

Hello Lokiyn - welcome to the desert of the real...

Not sure if you were after the "game history" or the "product history". Here's a couple of links to get you going.

Well, on a sticky, there could be at least a thread saying that there IS an existing Darksun 3.5... ! Giving where to get it, where to buy the SRD 2e darksun products and a link to my web page, since I own the most darksun web links :D

Welcome Lokiyn, to the harsh world of athas. I am Grummore, the silly frog, familiar of Jon, the oracle of athas. ;)

Follow the link in my signature and you will find a page with some informations and the HUGEST darksun links page. Ooooh yeah!

Our fine frog does have a very good site with many, many links. Athas.org should be your first stop, but his should be your second. As for the razzing, it's a newbie thing - you aren't the first, although I'm very impressed at Xlor not pulling out a huge power drill and boring it up your arse (shame on you, Nyt. Shame, shame, shame - you are truly rife with naughtiness).

Here's a cookie.

Awww, I can't stay mad at you, Nyt; here's some cotton candy:

Okay. We have the FAQ on another thread, so I won't bring that up here. I say we come up with the standard questions that come up over and over and include them in a FAQ included on this board thumbtacked to the top (have to talk to Wiz 'O about that one, I guess). This should be a FAQ of questions that have official answers, by the way. Not speculation. That's my take.

Welcome aboard, Lokiyn. Don't worry: I was here for Xlor's first post, too. :D

A quick History of Urik.

In the beginning, Hamanu created a spring, and it was good. Then he created the fields full of food, and this was good. Then, he created men and then the other races, and this too was good. Then, the men and other races, to show their humble thanks to Hamanu, they built the city of Urik, and this was not only good, but grand.

Welcome to Athasian History 101, it is whatever the SKs want the history to be.

You made me get up and find my DS stuff. I post after working a full day and dinner with friends. After that, spelling is no big deal.

PS: There are few lightning bolts on Athas seeing hows rain clouds means rain. However, I can still be struck down by a defiler.

Actually, Ral might be closer than you think. Pretty sure Urik is based on Uruk and Hamanu is based on Hammurabi. Loosely.

Damn you, smurfs!! Oh, god! They're in my hair! ArrrrrrGGGGHHHH!!!! They're eating my BRAAAAAIN!!!!!!

I kind of like the idea that the bugs were the halfling Nature Benders. Gotta admit: it makes sense.
