#1zombiegleemaxFeb 29, 2004 16:14:43 | Well, hello there, all ye who wander these incredibly illogical realms we call the fantasy world. Now, this thread is written very late in the night by a GM planning his first campaign. I will be using the standard D&D deities for my world (and yes, believe me, they will have a -lot- of influence of the world!). However, it has come to my somewhat sleepy attention that the same pantheon is used for the Greyhawk setting. Now, i plan on having fights with chosen of the deities, cults, avatars, and all that kind of neat stuff. However, i really do -hate- doing things that are contradictory to entire official CS´s, and thus, i ask something: Are the Greyhawk deities exactly the same as described in the Deities and Demigods book? How do they interact with other worlds? How do -you- use the standard D&D deities alongside Oerth (yes, i own the Temple of Elemental Evil game too)? What are happening to the deities, as written in the Greyhawk CS but not in the Deities & Demigods book? (if you wonder, this is written half-past eleven in the night. Excuse me if i don´t make any sense.) |

It is more of a rehash of what was published when the setting was still receiving some support, so this will really help you get up to speed on the so-called D&D pantheon. Because Greyhawk was responsible for lauching D&D into what it is today. The pantheon of gods portray as the D&D pantheon were actually reserved for the Greyhawk setting initially. First and foremost these are staples in, and I think I can safely say every Greyhawk campaign Heironious and Hextor are not only the brothers of war but also bitter rivals, St. Cuthbert is a bitter rival of Iuz since the beginning and not one of the many johnny come lately's present in the From the Ashes box set, even though it is rightly so. Lendor is the cheif deity of the Suel people and creator of the suel pantheon, While Istus is the cheif deity of the baklunish gods with few other gods in the pantheon as Istus has only elevated a few to this illustrious position. I forget who the father of the Oeridian gods and Flannish gods were as many of the gods from these pantheons have been ingrained throughout many of the other societies. While magic is present in Greyhawk it is found in lesser amounts or less often then what is common in many other campaigns worlds except Birthright which is truly a low magic world (a good thing in my opinion). Political intrigue is a mainstay of the setting and the good guys don't always come out on top. In fact evil has been on the rise since the Greyhawk Wars. You can find alot of information on sites like bastardgreyhawkisonfire.com or canonfire.com. I hope you will pick up a few parts of the history which makes Greyhawk what it is. I must admit that my opinion is a partial one, but if is wasn't I probably would not be posting in here. I hope this helps you with your campaign. |

#4MortepierreMar 01, 2004 16:58:45 | First, you can find here a complete listing of all GH deities (I would suggest downloading the pdf as the online listing isn't that good) Click me! Second, the Flanna and Oeridian deities are generally the most active in regard to worshippers. Baklunish deities are rather aloof and Suel gods are prone to scheme for a long time before acting. Third, all the deities of the GH setting have a kind of non-intervention agreement. Namely, they don't send an avatar on the Prime unless the rest of the deities agree (and that is tied to the Balance) unless the Prime happens to be the plane on which they live (i.e. Iuz). For instance, when St-Cuthbert sent an avatar to fight Iuz in the past, the gods of Good had to agree that their Evil counterparts would be able to do the same at some point of the future. |
#5robbastardMar 01, 2004 17:55:55 | This page has a brief overview of most of the Greyhawk deities, as well as archfiends & the like. Many of the entries also contain likes to various pictures of said deities. |
#6robbastardMar 01, 2004 17:59:39 | Oh, one big difference in how a GH deity is presented in GH & generic D&D can be found in St Cuthbert. Generic D&D has him as a god of retribution, but in GH Trithereon is the god of retribution. |
#7avfanaticMar 01, 2004 19:08:39 | According to 'A Guide to the World of Greyhawk Fantasy Setting' and 'Living Greyhawk Gazeteer' the relationships between the deites are thus: Berei serves Beory Mayaheine serves Pelor Zagyg serves Boccob Zodal serves Rao Zuoken serves Xan Yae Ulaa is married to/involved with Bleredd Wee Jas is married to/involved with Norebo Heironeus is at war with Hextor Iuz is at war with St. Cuthbert Ehlonna is opposed to Obad-Hai St. Cuthbert is opposed to Pholtus |
