I'm a former FR player who just started in a Greyhawk campaign.
What would you recommend for a Sorcerer's 5th level 0 spell?
I am a level 2 tiefling sorcerer.
So far I have:
0- Mage hand. Detect magic, Read Magic , Prestid.
1- MM, Shield
Basically i'm looking for something versatile that will work well in a group with 6 other melee-types.

I don't particularly think that one zero-level would be better over another just because you are playing the the world of Greyhawk. It also depends a lot on your GM and the particular campaign you are participating in.

I know that is not the answer you are looking for, but...

I would go with either open/close, or one of the attack spells (ray of frost/acid splash/disrupt undead)

Mending is a nice little versatile spell. Especially if your DM (or other PCs) tend to break stuff.

what are some creative ways to get more out of these? like for instance, would you:
Use mending to seal someone's cloak over their face?
CLOSE a wizard's component bag just as he went for it?

Dancing lights is a very useful and versatile spell. I've used the torchlight aspect to check out the extent of a large cavern and light a battle zone. I used the "figure" aspect at least twice (at low level) to distract both hobgoblins and later orcs. The spell doesn't last very long but usually battles don't either. It's also good for rooting out archers hidden in the dark.

I used it once to call up a "demon" and scare the hell out of a rude ferry operator.

Also Message is one of the most useful cantrips ever! We use something similar constantly in a game (HERO) I am playing in at the moment.

Sorry, basically the spell allows you to whisper a message to someone within line of sight. We use it across tavens when we want to alert another PC about something, in fights to co-ordinate activity (such as flanking), to scare the bejezzies out of someone by having a voice suddenly in their ear etc.

It is a general utility spell that enables communication without the chance of being overheard - it can be used in LOTs of situations only limited by your imagination and whether you can see the person you need to talk to.

I like that. Previously I had used similar tactics albeit with the help of a pseudodragon familiar.
