Believe it or not, you don't have to take the WoHS prestige class, but you'll probably still have to abide by the conventions of the Orders as they will induct you into one of them following the Test. So, even though you won't have any of the benefits of the WoHS class, you'll have to answer to the Conclave on matters of tradition, won't be allowed to use any bladed weapon larger than a dagger, that kind of thing.

The DLCS text says something about instantly acquiring the WoHS class upon completion of the Test, but that's not true - you would have to first qualify for the class (have all the right feats and skill ranks) and have enough XP to advance to a new level (which may or may not have occurred during the Test).

Cheers,
Cam

That phrase has been puzzling me as well. I never gave much attention to it though, and have treated the two tests I have been dungeon-mastering as regular adventures(xp-wise). It's just that after having completed the test, the player can choose to take the WoHS PrC. The thing that the test does in my campaign, is that it gives you one or two flaws (either my own very special, or from the UA), and you get one or two bonus feats for it as I mentioned in an earlier post.

Also, you can take a few levels of WoHS then do a few of the base wizard class. Eventually, you'll have to do this when there are no more levels of WoHS left anyway.

That extra feat that a 5th level wizard gets is a pretty nice prize, though, especially if you're trying to qualify for a second prestige class, ala the War Mage.

Just to play devil's advocate for a bit, what would the Wizards of High Sorcery look like as an Unearthed Arcana style variant class of the wizard? Would it perhaps be a better fit than the prestige class option?

I mean, we already know that most prestige classes are not going to be a good fit for the WoHS. Namely those prestige classes which rely on:

1) Blending martial prowess with magic. (ie. Eldritch Knight).
2) Relying on sources of power outside of the three moons (ie. demonologists, supernatural ancestors etc)

However, many seem to be expressing interest in other prestige classes, such as the new prestige classes in the Towers of High Sorcery book (which presumably rely on previous levels of the WoHS prestige class), the Solamnic Auxillary mage, or even the bookish DMG prestige classes such as the Archmage and Loremaster.

So given that the WoHS turning out to be a building block for a few prestige classes on its own, and can be applied to at a very low level, would have a variant class made more sense? Or perhaps using just the PHB wizard and turning the order secrets into metamagic feats?

WoHS is a 10-stage class, so it's a perfect candidate for taking beyond, right? It's an identiy I thought, a prestige class, and after taking 10 levels of X Robe on top of your 3 of wizard, you're gonna be identifying yourself more as a X Robe than a wizard, right? So you'd take an 11th level of X Robe instead of a 4th level of Wizard? Or maytbe use one of those other classes like war mage or auxillary mage, or I'm sure there'll be more in the ToHS book.

Taking more levels in wizard help out your levels in WoHS, since they increase spellcasting power and provide bonus feats, familiar enhancements, and so forth. It's not "slumming it" to pick up wizard levels if you've already maxed out WoHS levels. Most, if not all, high-level Wizards of High Sorcery have more than just the bare minimum of wizard levels.
