Knight of Thorn vs. White Robe

Mar 17, 2004 3:44:55 Does anyone else think a White Robe loses out in this deal? I was just rereading over the different prestige classes and I kind of think its unfair that the WoHS has to give up another school to get "enhanced" specialization, when a Thorn Knight pretty much gets the thing for free.

I think the Thorn Knights are way better than the WoHS prestige class, no matter which color robe you pick. I know they almost have to take one level of fighter, but to me it seems to be worth it. Anyone think the same?

Mar 17, 2004 4:58:21 Well I kind of always got the impression that the Thorn Knights simply were better than the Mages of High Sorcery. In the various confruntations they had the Knights always seemed to come out on top.

The disadvantages of being a Thorn Knight is simply that you are a Thorn Knight and have obvious ties to a rather big,nasty and disliked organisation that will be keeping a close eye on your activities.

I also don't care so much about "game-balance" (whatever that elusive creature may be) that the two classes have to be exactly matched. The balancing aspect in many prestige classes is the roleplay and background aspect rather than just with the stats and numbers. Oh and also the DM invoking rule's 0 and 7 putting his footdown and saying No.

Rule 0= the DM always has the final say.
Rule 7= Don't take the . (Stolen from Maelstrom LARP))

Mar 17, 2004 13:38:53 Roleplay is all nice, but you also have to look for game balance. If one character is doing all the work in almost every situation, theres a problem.

But anyways, I don't expact them to be the same...it just seems the Thorn Knight gets the same thing as a White Robe..but not the disadvantage. and specialization is a big thing. Its not like a free feat or something. Maybe the Thorn Knigts are more powerful..who knows. Just thought it kind of sucked for the White Robe heh.

Mar 20, 2004 18:03:44 I think that the advantage of being a member of the WoHS is that you have all of the Wizards knowledge right there at your fingertips. Access to more diverse spells, magic items to be used and returned, and the backing of the Gods of Magic.

Thorn Knights get to be the wizards of the KoN, but they don't get anywhere near the same respect, resources, or knowledge base to work with. They seem to be barely more than a group of renegade wizards who get access to more arcane powers.

I would rather be a WoHS anyday.

They aren't better mages, they just draw power from all three moons. In that sense they are renegades. So they are more powerful, but not better.
They are also more concerned with battle magic and military support through magic, because they are in the service of Takhisis. The WoHS are more concerned with magical studies in all formes, and since they are a much older order, they have acces to much more interesting knowlegde.
But the Thorn knights have to three moons advantegde, and they should have it.

The WoHS aren't the most popular people, but their company will always beats the Thorn knights, I agree.
