How many hour do you spend on your DL Campaign?

I seem to spend anywhere from 12-15 hours a week on my DL Campaign and we only play on Sunday's for about 5 hours.

So, my question to everyone else is how many hours does it take for you to prep for your campaigns?

I think it takes me so long because I try to create a backstory for everything that I do. I have my PC's taking out the Dragon Overlords, and they are going around collecting Artifacts from the Age of Dreams to use against the dragons.

Each artifact has it's own history, and I write those up, and then I write up why they are located where they are now - I have a Bard in the party, and what his Gather Information checks don't tell him, his Bardic Knowledge checks do.

Doing things this way makes for some great stories, and excellent role playing sessions, or so I'm told, but it can be time consuming.

What do you all think?

It depends. If I am using a pre-written module then I only spend a couple hours making sure that it fits ok, and making whatever changes I need to.
If I am writing it myself I tend to put 5-6 hours a week in on it.

Thats a great amount of work you've got there Fiz

Personally I try and put about 4-5 hours in per week (we only get to play every 2 weeks though), but between work and sleep it doesn't always work out that way.

On the plus side I've been running Dragonlance campaigns for about 9 years for several different groups (At one point I was running a campaign with 6 groups of players in the same time frame across the continent of Ansalon totalling nearly 40 players), and I've still got all my old notes on the computer to draw on when it comes to backstory's and such.

It's good to see a player's face light up when you mention something one of their previous characters did/took part in as "history"

I currently running two campaigns at the moment, and could be starting another any time. Only one's DL, and it seems to be a bit more hack 'n' slashy ( ) than the other one. The other one, in turn, is set in a homebrew, so I have to make up most of the world as we go along, so I spend far more time on the notDL one than on the DL one.

Because I wing a lot of the campaign, most of the time I spend preparing comes from a stat block for the important NPCs the PCs almost definately will fight, reading up on where the PCs are, and working out what the opposing organisations (in DL, the ogres and dragonspawn, in homebrew, the Church, Thieve's Guild and lumberjacks) are up to at this time.

I always wanted to be a lumberjack...

Between uni, work and a social life I guess I have about two hours a week. Shame shame on me!

Thank Chris for the Key of Destiny!
