#1larazonApr 03, 2004 14:08:49 | Can anyone tell me where to go or what to look at for a comprehensive listing of half-races and their stats? I need them for a Dark Sun game I am about to be playing in, and if anyone can suggest a good half race for a cleric, I would appreciate it greatly. |
#2dawnstealerApr 03, 2004 15:35:41 | I highly recommend a dwelf. |
#3PennarinApr 03, 2004 15:40:32 | For Dark Sun half-races, you have the half-elf, mul, half-giant. Nothing fancy. You can get them as a free download at www.athas.org in v3.5. For genasi and stuff, use the races in Forgotten Realms as presented in the Campaign Setting and in Races of Faerun. Or you could go at this adress to get a fan's version of Planescape genasis, or go for the official Planesacape genasis at this adress and download a free document: Chapter 2. Hope it helps |
#4zombiegleemaxApr 03, 2004 15:51:36 | What specific half-races were you aking about though? |
#5larazonApr 04, 2004 0:07:35 | I'm not sure. This will be my first ever Dark Sun game, so really anything that would make a neat Cleric. I dont really want to be human beacause almost every one else is going to be. I'd prefer a good favored race, in whatever flavor of good. |

I'd prefer a good favored race, in whatever flavor of good Hmmm, in a flavor of good. Well, thri-kreen are good, unless they're hungry and your an elf, in which case they're evil. Half-giants are good, unless of course they were good yesterday, in which case, they're evil today. Dwarves are good, unless of course you get in the way of their focus, in which case they kill you in a rightly evil manner. Elves are good, unless of course your from outside the elve's tribe, in which case, they'll rob you and kill you, very evil acts in and of themselves. Pterran are good also, unless they catch you consorting with defilers, misusing the land, or calling them lizards, in which case they'll tear you to pieces, which may or may not be an evil thing, since its open to interpretation. Aarocokra are as good as they come, until they get inside an enclosed space in which case they'll lie, cheat, steal, kill, or peck out someone's eyes to get outside, but that's not really evil I guess. There's really no truly 'good' races on Athas. Even the good guys often times do evil things to further the cause of 'good'. While nothing's really stopping you from playing a good character, no single race is inheirently good in the way that races on other worlds are. For example, elves are generally aligned as good (neutral or chaotic). But that really only applies to how they treat other elves in their tribe. To everyone outside they're tribe, they quite likely neutral evil. One nest of aarakocra are considered good and peacefull, but that's one nest out of hundreds of others that are rotten carrion eating buzzards. Thri-kreen are similar to elves in that they are generally good towards their immediate pack (pack can consist of anything from other kreen to adventureing buddies), but they can be cold and evil to those outside the pack. Ask your DM what races he's allowing first. Then, go by what ones you want to role-play out. |
#7jon_oracle_of_athasApr 04, 2004 1:56:46 | You might also want to consider your cleric's element of worship when selecting a race. Aarakocra, for example, would have a natural affinity for Air. |
#8zombiegleemaxApr 04, 2004 12:30:32 | Originally posted by Larazon In the latest Dragon magazine they talk a little about how the various classes function in DS. They had a rather interesting idea for the elemental clerics. Basically, most clerics are just a little bit crazy, because in order to become an elemental cleric, you must put yourself at the mercy of your chosen element. Setting yourself on fire, jumping off a cliff, diving bound into an oasis, etc, and then the elemental powers will intervene, and thereafter you may become a cleric. But... they don't always intervene. Sometimes the Aarocockras go splat. Aarocockras favor air magic, dwarves like earth and fire, Elves I think prefer air magic, and the rest of the races aren't particularly religious, though Half-Elves would enjoy a life as a cleric, since the elements don't give a kank's behind who his parents were. Pterrans and Halflings are usually druids instead. Playing a Para-Elemental may be interesting, depending on what take the DM has on them. Some sources describe the paras as dastardly beings similar to defilers, others say that they just favor elements that are strong on athas now. (Silt, Magma, Sun, and Rain) |
#9dawnstealerApr 04, 2004 12:41:44 | Best way to think about it is this: Athas is a place where the bad guys won...handedly. Now I won't give away big parts of the plot (although you've probably already tracked them down, if you're on this board), but the other's are right: there really isn't a "good" race on Athas. In most other campaigns, you can kill the bad guy with impunity and the local king or whatever will probably thank you. On Athas, he probably works for the local king, who will then eat you for killing their lackey. In short, you have to survive long enough to do good, and a good DS GM will have you focussing much more on survival than esoteric beliefs of "good" and "evil." On Athas: there's alive or dead. On that note, go with a human. For some odd reason, there's a disproportionately large number of humans on Athas... |

#11dawnstealerApr 04, 2004 15:57:12 | Or dwelfs! Dwelfs rule!! |
#12larazonApr 05, 2004 13:10:41 | As I read through the description of Clerics I thought it would be neat to be a Cleric of the Air Domain. Any suggestions for that concept? |
#13dawnstealerApr 05, 2004 13:15:02 | Aarakocra. |

#16dawnstealerApr 06, 2004 19:07:13 | You could go with the "winged dwelf." They're rare, though, but I've seen them. I HAVE. |
#17nytcrawlrApr 06, 2004 19:37:29 | You need to share your drugs Dawn, seriously. |
