I noticed that the alignment requirement for the Steel Legionnaire PrC is 'Any non-evil' whereas the alignment requirements for the three Legion PrCs from the Age of Mortals supplement are 'Any good'.

I'd be interested to know if this was a deliberate decision or a mistake, and peoples thoughts on this issue.

I'm thinking in particular of ex-Dark Knights, who are mentioned in some of the explanation of the AoM PrCs.

Good question, and one that I'm not sure I have a definitive answer for. I don't recall the reasoning behind this decision when the prestige classes were written.

Many of the founding members of the Legion are ex-Dark Knights, which would be a good argument for a "non-evil" alignment for the Steel Legionnaire. Certainly, not all of these ex-Dark Knights turned completely towards the light.

I don't recall hearing of any Thorn or Skull Knights who joined the LoS, although I may be wrong on that. Anything is possible. They could, theoretically, become Legion Sorcerers and Legion Mystics respectfully.

It seems to me that the AoM prestige classes exemplify what the Legion is all about - an organization that works for the overall good. The Legion Mystic definitely fits this bill, as the spiritual guidance of the LoS.

These classes also are specialty roles within the Legion, and are not representative of the overall whole. I guess you could say that the overall body of the LoS are Steel Legionnaires, which also encompass ex-Dark Knights, ergo the non-evil alignment. The AoM prestige classes would then be those specialty roles designed after the initial conception of the Legion, which are taken on by those who exemplify the ideals of the Legion.

Anyway, those are some general thoughts. I think the key thing on alignment for the Legion is that they're non-evil. At the same time, remember that the organization is founded on the overall good, and that their members have grown beyond their initial ex-Dark Knights.

I don't know if that helps or not. Just rambling out some thoughts.

There wouldn't be anything overtly unbalancing or detrimental to the flavor of the AoM Legion classes to have them be open to any non-evil character, so if there's an occasion for you to use them in your campaign for ex-knights of Neraka, then go ahead.

The Legion of Steel gained most of its knowledge of mysticism and sorcery from former knights of the Skull and Thorn, in some cases by those members turning from the darker paths of the knighthood and in others through interrogation or study. Some good-aligned mystics and sorcerers allied with the Legion also infiltrated Nerakan strongholds and risked their lives to acquire this knowledge, too, so the overall focus of the prestige classes was "good characters who use evil's tricks to fight evil". But, this doesn't necessarily rule out neutral characters.

Well, the bit from AoM that set me thinking was on p.37 - "Some of the oldest Legion sorcerers are ex-Thorn Knights..."

My thoughts are that the Legion PrC alignment requirements in AoM should be "Any non-evil". I would certainly change them for any players who wanted to play the PrC in my game (though that's not an issue to be honest). But I'd still be interested to hear official word on the subject, just for that ridiculous peace of mind that comes with official status ;)
