#1dawnstealerApr 04, 2004 12:15:43 | One of my friend's at Microsoft was telling me that, to make it as an artist these days, you have to have 3d art in your portfolio. Now I have a couple of things, but nothing too impressive (consider them "concept" art). I decided a great tribute would be to make Dregoth. Interesting here, though: Do I go with the "horse skull" version of Baxa (kind of like the way it looks), or the full-on reptile version? Maybe something in between, ala human-croc? Here's an example of the skulls: Reptile: Horse (yeah, I'd add pointy teeth): I'm not going to add an "in between" pic here because, obviously, nothing like that exists. What do you guys, the fans of this world, think? |
#2beyowulfApr 04, 2004 12:20:11 | Go with the Horse skull. A dragon with a crocodile snout just strikes me as a bit odd. |
#3zombiegleemaxApr 04, 2004 12:24:57 | Yeah, I'd go with the horse skull too. If you would like to look at more skulls, http://www.skullsunlimited.com, is a great place for them. |
#4dawnstealerApr 04, 2004 12:34:30 | Actually, the Brom pics have a lot more in common with croc's than horses. Maybe I should combine the two? Croc snout with horse-head? Dregoth also has two horns, so I'll need to factor that in. |
#5zombiegleemaxApr 04, 2004 13:06:40 | I went back and looked at the image of Dregoth by Brom. Dawnstealer is right. He does have an elongated snout similar to an alligator. I would have to vote for some cross between the two. |
#6nytcrawlrApr 04, 2004 13:19:26 | I vote for a cross between as well since the horse skull isn't elongated enough and the alligator one is too elongated. |
#7KamelionApr 04, 2004 14:37:25 | Yeah, go for a cross of some kind - a big brutish head and a nice toothy snoot. |
#8dawnstealerApr 04, 2004 14:37:44 | Agreed. Also, I'm throwing in a bit of human. This is kind of fun - I'll post the hybrid when I get it finished (should be a few minutes). |
#9dawnstealerApr 04, 2004 14:45:59 | And here it is: Dregoth Skull |

#12OninotakiApr 04, 2004 15:26:46 | Excellent, I think that should work perfectly:D |
#13zombiegleemaxApr 04, 2004 16:10:19 | Yep. Looks great! |
#14dawnstealerApr 05, 2004 23:52:46 | All right, 3d pic is up. Got a long ways to go: not skinned up, the lower jaw isn't smoothed out, etc; but all in all, not a bad start. Check it out, if you're so inclined (link is in earlier post). |
#15dawnstealerApr 05, 2004 23:57:54 | Added a side-shot and a slightly different angle. That's the beauty of 3d: once you have the model done, stuff get's REAL easy. |
#16KamelionApr 06, 2004 2:09:49 | Totally cool. Very spooky to see those evil widdle eyes looking right at you. Nice one . |
#17zombiegleemaxApr 06, 2004 11:11:35 | That looks very good Dawnstealer. What program are you using? 3ds Max? |
#18dawnstealerApr 06, 2004 19:08:28 | Yup. Just need to smooth out that lower jaw, add some teeth to the upper jaw, make the body, and I'm set. Oh, and skin it. Even so, should take to long if I can just get some time to sit down with it. Probably see how far I can get it this weekend. |
#19xlorepdarkhelm_dupApr 06, 2004 19:32:08 | Have you checked out Blender3D yet Dawnstealer? I used it (and the GIMP for 2D) to do up a GUI for the online game EverQuest a while back. It's been made open source, and the GUI for it is drastically being improved. The GIMP, of course, being one of the two 2D graphic programs that are the "industry standard" (from what I've seen) for 2D graphics (the other program being Photoshop). I like Blender3D and GIMP because of their open-source design, the fact they are relatively stable and well-known in the OSS community, and are pretty darn good. Ok, I'm gonna stop the sales pitch now... |
