I just got the two gazetteers yesterday and was totally amazed at the depth of information. I am now thinking of running a campaign in Greyhawk. My question for you Greyhawk DMs is this:

Where (in which nation) would you recommend beginning a campaign?

I'm looking for anything special, I just want a sort of run-of-the-mill base to build from.

if you are looking for someplace with a lot of information already written that you can find and use I would go with the domain of greyhawk (the city of greyhawk boxed set, greyhawk: the adventure begins, and the campaign book in from the ashes all from 2e, expand upon that area and it is well covered.

if you do not mind doing a bit more work yourself, then just about any place can be a fun area to set a game in. I myself run one game (Semi-regularly on the weekends) set in the cairn hills/domain of greyhawk, and I run another one (Weekly monday nights) set in the Viscounty of Salinmoor in Keoland.

Verbobonc and the former shieldlands also seem to be popular places to set games, based upon what I have seen people talking about here on the boards.

what sort of a campaign do you envision... epic quests? grunt adventurers? Mercenaries? Lots of Naval combat?, Political Intrigue? that sort of descision can have lots of bearing upon where you decide to set the game.

If you like political intrigue, then the lands of the former Great Kingdom are for you. For "wheels within wheels" kinds of plots, Ahlissa is a political goldmine, but for a little more military campaign, the North Provience has definite possibilities.

There are also tons of dark, creepy forests and steamy jungles to explore. Not to mention the icy lands of the North, the Bright Desert, the unknown Dry Steppes and the Sea of Dust, abandoned towers, ancient ruins, old crypts, all manner of sea-going adventures (there are several oceans and many lakes and rivers to sail upon)....

There are quite a few places to get started, depending on what you are looking for.

Keoland is a very good place to start, 2nd to Greyhawk itself. What I particularly admire about Keoland is from 576 to 590+ common year, Keoland has had little drastic changes to it, so whatever sources you happen to use should mesh well as you tend to accumulate more material on it.
