Looking for a non-linear adventure

Hi!

Now that svgames has made available to us all classic D&D and AD&D modules, I want to start playing with my group one of them.

We really dislike linear adventures, and pure dungeon crawls. We prefer modules with lots of NPC interaction, intrigue, strange murders and so on. And modules where players have a real decision power.

Our best RPG experience has always been playing Carl Sargent's WHFRP Power Behind the Throne. We know that this book is perhaps unsurpassed, but we are looking for something similar.

Do you know any adventure that has these characteristics?

Mny thanks.

Hmm, where to begin ..

The C4/C5 (To Find a King/Bane of Llywelyn) modules present you with an original plot to restore a king to a land which needs one badly. It uses elements of the Celtic mythos and makes good use of prophecies. The end is a bit high-fantasy to my taste but good nonetheless.

I8 (Ravager of Time) is located in a swamp ruled by a Theocracy. Lots of interaction with NPCs in this one to find out the truth about what is really going on behind the scene. Plus your players will find themselves in their most unusual.. er.. physical situation ever :D

L2 (Assassin's Knot) is the perfect occasion to run into organized human opponents, the deadliest monsters IMHO.

N1 (Against the Cult of the Reptile God) has it all. The sleepy innocent-looking village, the conspiracy, the inhuman opponents and even a bit of dungeon in the end.

The U1/U2/U3 Saltmarsh trilogy made superb use of an isolated coastal village and the land around it. Plus the intrigue left many open doors to the players. Just deciding who to side with was half the fun of these modules.

N5 (Under Illefarn) can literally be the crucible on which to build your campaign from the ground up. Small town with full details on who's who and what's around. Easily relocated to any setting.

Hour of the Knife is a great module to those players who love intrigue and horror. Based on a Jack the Ripper plot, it's set in Ravenloft but could be easily relocated to other settings (though with a bit of fine tuning).

Hope this helps!

L1 and L2 are nice non-linear adventures(although L1 has a dungeon to crawl through the characters are not forced there).

X3 Master of the Desert Nomads is also a good non-linear adventure, (in fact most of the X series are pretty non-linear althouhg they are not greyhawk specific, most could be fit into greyhawk with a little work).

I agree about the X series. I have placed it in the Bright Desert and combined it with the Rary information for a pretty large campaign arc. Toss in the Ghost Tower on the coast and you almost have an entire campaign with a little work.
