#1zombiegleemaxMay 09, 2004 14:07:33 | Hello Citizens, Can any of you tell me if there are paperback books with Mordenkainen in them. I would assume they would be written by Gary Gygax, but I have had no luck in finding them. |
#2avfanaticMay 09, 2004 15:47:38 | I am not aware of any, Gygax wrote some novels with Greyhawk as the setting but they were centered around Gord the Rogue. |
#3grodogMay 09, 2004 19:23:54 | Here are the canon references to Mordy, per Jason Zavoda's index:Architecture By Leomund & Mordenkainen [BK] FYI, the various references above to Dragon 82 are from an article Bruce Heard wrote about spell research IIRC.... |

#5grodogMay 10, 2004 10:51:54 | Originally posted by Mortepierre Good point! Jason's index is not 100% complete, and NW is definitely one of the books that isn't included in it. |

#7MortepierreMay 10, 2004 13:25:40 | It is and it isn't. It was printed back in the days when TSR was publishing novels about not only its traditional settings (FR, RL, etc..) but also various "one shot" heroes. The GH logo wasn't branded all across the front cover of NW but it was a GH novel nonetheless given the action was set in Greyhawk city itself. Long story made short: seers are getting murdered in GH City and the commander of the Night Watch is drawn in to investigate. He runs into more trouble than expected and that's when ol' Mordenkainen "invites" him over for a little chat. I rather liked the novel as the major NPCs of the city couldn't (or wouldn't) help and so the commander and his pals had no deus ex machina to save their beacon. Even Mordenkainen merely pointed him in the right (if cryptic) direction. The setting was a grim and gritty Greyhawk City, not the one fans of the setting have come to expect (except perhaps in the days of Gord the Rogue...). |
#8cwslyclghMay 10, 2004 13:29:52 | wasn't it also set in the future when lizard folk are nearly ectinct or something... IIRC I remember thinking that the auther didn;t know a heck of a lot about the game when reading the book. |
#9grodogMay 10, 2004 17:26:11 | I found a copy of Night Watch recently and read it, and was pleasantly surprised: I'd heard it was good, and it was a quick, enjoyable read (much like Tomb of Horrors---satisfying game fiction). Robin Bailey (the author) seemed to know some stuff about GH, though the novel was mostly generic with respect to the setting as a whole. He did mention various temples and faiths, the ruling oligarchs, Mordy, etc. The novel definitely had a GH feel (certainly much moreso than the horrific Rose Estes efforts....). edit: Oops, forgot to answer your Q Wes: NW is definitely set in the future, about 70 years or something like that IIRC. When he appeared in the book, I was surprised that Mordy was still alive.... |
