#1zombiegleemaxMay 09, 2004 21:08:57 | I'm a huge fan of the forgotten realms book and I wanted to try out the Dragonlance books. I know that many of the stories spand several books. Which one should I start with? |
#2talinthasMay 09, 2004 21:24:44 | the chronicals. they're the basis of the setting. |
#3cam_banksMay 09, 2004 21:32:22 | Originally posted by talinthas The Chronicles are another good place to start. ;) Cheers, Cam |

#5daedavias_dupMay 10, 2004 1:48:52 | Just so you know, Chronicles is the following books: Volume 1: Dragons of Autumn Twilight Volume 2: Dragons of Winter Night Volume 3: Dragons of Spring Dawning |
#6rian_lightbladeMay 10, 2004 15:48:10 | The Chronicles followed by the Twins trilogy (or is it Legends ?). The meetings sextet is interesting as is the set of book detailing what the companions were doing before the Chronicles. I also recommend the lost races trilogy and the elven kingdoms trilogy(kinslayer ?). Personally I stopped reading DL books after Dragons of Summer's Flame came out. I did pick up the Uncle Trapspringer Book and the Gilthanthals book (sp?) but stopped reading the Trapspringer book after the first page, when I discovered that the writter changed his name from Trapspringer Furfoot to Trapspringer Fargo (or some other unkenderlike name). |
#7zombiegleemaxMay 10, 2004 16:21:34 | If you want to read really good trilogies, The Barbarians Trilogy, The Icewall Trilogy and the best, The Kingpriest Trilogy. Each touches on the rich history of Krynn. The first two aren't really related to anything of consquence, but are great stories. The Kingpriest Trilogy is absolutely phenominal! One of few books that actually had me stop every now and then to collect my thoughts and in some cases, calm down. These are just opinions of course, but they're great books. Actually, I got my Mom to read them too, she also loved them, The Kingpriest being her favorite to date. |
#8zombiegleemaxMay 11, 2004 4:47:20 | the place to start, which is where the world started from. the chronicles: dragons of autum twilight dragons of winter night dragon of spring dawning following that series is the legends trilogy: time of the twins war of the twins test of the twins. after those 6 books i would read dragons of summer flame that will bring you up to the close of the 4th age. after that you have some choices. you could continue forwards through time and read the war of the souls trilogy dragons of fallen sun dragons of a lost star dragons of a vanished moon or you could go backwards in time to the books that detail what the heroes of the lance did before the chronicles. called the preludes series: darkness and light kendermore riverwind the plainsman flint the king tanis the shadow years as an intersting side note caramon and raistlin the twins get a trilogy all to themselves. soulforge brothers in arms brothers majere or if your really interested you could read the meetings sextant before the preludes series, that will allow you to read all the history between the heroes of the lance, and how they met, and what they did. kindred spirits wanderlust dark heart the oath and the measure steel and stone the companions after that it is all up to you. there are all sorts of stories, you could read about the story behind the solamnic knights, or you could read the lost histories of all the 'forgotten' races, like the minotaurs, the irda, the kagonesti, the gully dwarfs but the great thing about all the dragonlance stories is the diversity of the books. |
#9brimstoneMay 11, 2004 10:50:27 | The most direct route from start to finish (without backfill or history) is: Chronicles Trilogy Legends Trilogy Second Generation Dragons of Summer Flame Dragons of a New Age Trilogy Dhamon Saga War of Souls Minotaur Wars Trilogy Dark Disciple Trilogy Most of those are by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman except for the DoaNA and the Dhamon Saga which are written by Jean Rabe and the Minotaur Wars which is written by Richard Knaak. After that...you've got several choices. Ancient History: Lost Histories Series Legend of Huma Kaz the Minotaur Elven Nations Trilogy Dwarven Nations Trilogy Barbarians Trilogy Ergothian Trilogy Icewall Trilogy Kingpriest Trilogy Lost Legends Series Then there's pre-War of the Lance history (mostly about the Heroes of the Lance) Meetings Sextet Preludes Series Heroes Series Classics Series Raistlin Chronicles Villians Series Warriors Series Then of course you've got your Chaos War 5th Age stories Chaos War Series Bridges of Time Series Kang's Regiment Series Crossroads Series Age of Mortals Series Knights of Solamnia Trilogy Lisha Trilogy Taladas Trilogy And after all that...there are still about 15 anthologies of short stories set in and around the War of the Lance, or during the Cataclysm time, during all time, during the Chaos War, during the early 5th Age, during the War of Souls...just take your pick (they're usually pretty easy to pick out from the titles when they take place). And on top of all that...there are a few world knowledge books and novels just chalked full of information about Ansalon and its inhabitants: Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home More Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home History of the Dragonlance Saga Bertrem's Guides Set Odyssey of Gilthanas The Bestiary I hope this helps. |
#10NivedMay 11, 2004 10:58:57 | How could you leave Vinus Solamnus out of those anchient histories Brim? One of the best one shot novels in the series. |

#12zombiegleemaxMay 11, 2004 21:31:06 | Chronicles, then Legends, Second Generation, Summer Flame. That should be a great start. I would toss in Legend of Huma (I believe, and quite a few others, too, that this is really one of the best ones of the bunc. There isn't fencing with broadswords, people use shields, people in plate mail get tired...) Enjoy. I believe I have read most of them, at least up until the 5th age, when I sort of petered out (college, then real life), and enjoyed most of them. I find that DL is more enjoyable, to me, since it is relatively small compared to FR. More stuff happens, in a tighter space. |
#13zombiegleemaxMay 12, 2004 22:47:57 | Originally posted by Rian Lightblade Umm...you remember how every kender has an Uncle Trapspringer? Well, even though I think the last name could have been better, this is supposed to be the Trapspringer in which all the other Trapspringers have been named after. I think it takes place just after the Cataclysm, long before Tas's Uncle Trapspringer. |
#14zombiegleemaxMay 13, 2004 12:35:47 | Here is my Suggested reading list to you Chronicles Legends The Second Generation Dragons of a New Age War of the Souls The Dark Disciple (to date there is no books out for the trilogy yet but my the time you get here the first book Amber and Ashes should be out) This will give you the main bulk of Dragonlance After reading these main book I suggest reading an any order Raistlin Chronicles Dhamon Saga The Minotaur Wars These books are mainly sub stories |
#15eaglosMay 13, 2004 19:20:29 | I went like this --------------------- Chronicles Legends Second Generation The dawning of a new age, The day of the tempest, The eve of the maelstrom Dragons of summer flame Soulforge Brothers Majere Brothers in arms ...... ---- From there it's really up to you to choose. The combinations are endless. |
#16zombiegleemaxMay 14, 2004 0:32:19 | Originally posted by Rian Lightblade His name wasnt ever Furfoot. And come on, Fargo is kenderlike....how goofy sounding can you get?;) |
