#1zombiegleemaxMay 13, 2004 9:36:18 | I'm looking for ideas on which Dungeon adventures might be easily adapted to using in Darksun. I have all the issues from #89 onward so adventures in those issues would be most useful. Also though, I wonder if there were any specific Darksun adventures in any Dungeon issues? Actually, I know there are since I have two. Raiders of the Chanth and Grave Circumstances. But if there are any others maybe I can find a back issue somewhere if I'm lucky. So, which adventures have you been able to adapt for your games? |
#2GrummoreMay 13, 2004 10:33:59 | First, Greetings! Second, if you are looking for adventure, and more, a better set of rules than in Dragon-Dungeon mag. you should to at athas.org. It's been 4 years they work on a darksun conversion which as kept the real flavor of the setting, while paizo conversion from the magazines as poorly failed. On the web site (athas.org) there is two adventures (free!) Whispers of the Storm and Tyrian conspiracy. Both are 3rd edition (need to be updated to 3.5). If you go to thier site, of course you have the core rules (which is as official as paizo one, both are) AND you will find a document filled with athasian monsters (roughly 200 converted monsters). If you like wandering the waste of internet, you go at my web site (address below) and search through the hugiest YEAH ! HUGIEST :D web links page. Good gaming! |

#4xlorepdarkhelm_dupMay 14, 2004 12:33:41 | I have never subscribed to, nor bought any Dragon or Dungeon magazines. A friend of mine did, buyt after the horrible job of releasing Spelljammer and the subsiquent horrific job of releasing Dark Sun, he cancelled his subscription and has burned his copies of their magazines. He claimed that it was "liberating". |
#5zombiegleemaxMay 14, 2004 12:50:07 | I actually cancelled my subscription to these magazines as well, but not because of any "conversions" they made. I just found that I had too many issues and I haven't used any of them yet, so I figured, why spend more money on more stuff I won't use, until I've used the stuff I bought already? But to answer your question, those are the only two adventures published in Dungeon specifically for dark sun. However, I have spotted a few that could be "raped" for use in dark sun. I dont' have them here at the moment, but I know Gith Queen adventure was pretty cool. And most of it takes place on the Astral Plane, which could easily be tied to Athas somewhere. I would tend to avoid any that involve too many demons or travelling to the outer planes, as dark sun isn't really connected to those other than through Dregoth's Planar Mirror. |
#6doppleganger_dupMay 15, 2004 9:52:53 | Well, Last Stand at Outpost Three of course is a third. :D I'm curious Ehtoz, can you describe a little bit about the backstories for Raiders of the Chanth and Grave Circumstances? Are they well-written? High-level? |
#7ishnidMay 15, 2004 15:43:22 | I don't have any of the magazines but a quick description. Dungeon Adventures #44 (Volume 8, Number 2, November/December 1993) "Raiders of the Chanth"- Randy Maxwell, pgs. 36-52 (AD&D game DARK SUN adventure, levels 3-5) The peaceful tribesmen have taken to raiding. It's your job to stop them. Dungeon Adventures #56 (Volume 10, Number 2, November/December 1995) "Grave Circumstance"- Bill Slavicsek, pgs. 38-49, 70 (DARK SUN Adventure, character levels 5-7; 27 total levels) Take a first journey into the new lands of Athas. |
#8doppleganger_dupMay 16, 2004 14:04:48 | heh, ya, I did a little digging of my own too! THE YEAR OF PRIEST'S DEFIANCE (3-6 characters of levels 3-5) 9 pages, Art by Baxa In the barren wastes of Athas, an ancient ruin is uncovered by a sandstorm. (Desert, arid) RAIDERS OF THE CHANTH (4-6 characters of levels 3-5) 17 pages, Art by Baxa A magically-constructed living brain called the Chanth uses its psionic powers to subvert the creatures of Big Fork Island. (Wasteland/Plateau, arid to sub-tropical) GRAVE CIRCUMSTANCES (3-6 characters of levels 5-7) 13 pages, Art by Daniele Heroes are asked to track down an elf defiler who's stolen a precious relic from their camp. Their search leads them into Troll Grave Chasm. (Barren waste/Desert, arid) |
#9zombiegleemaxMay 17, 2004 12:44:56 | Oh yeah, forgot the YEAR OF PRIEST"S DEFIANCE adventure. I own the other two though. I'll give you a brief look at those. For any players who are hoping to play these modules, STOP READING NOW! Raiders of the Chanth takes place on the small island near Grak's Pool and Altaruk in the Estuary of the Forked Tongue. Basically, the heroes get hired to investigate strange raids along that roadway by raiders riding flying small flying craft, similar to windsurfing boards. The raiders are a mix of humans native to the island. Once the heroes get to the island, they find out that the raiders are operating from the southern tip of the island in an old abandoned tower. The raiders are actually thralls of a Chanth, described in Terrors of Athas. A hideous experiment that was abandoned here centuries ago. The heroes must defeat the chanth to set free the thralls, and get a fairly sizeable reward for stopping the raiders. GOOD AVENTURE. My party loved it. Grave Circumstances was not quite as good unfortunately. The PC's have to track down a rogue defiler who stole a map from one of the raiding tribes up north near Troll Grave Chasm. Ravage I think? The defiler is headed into the chasm and soon the PC's reach a sinking ruin where they run into the last troll. Yes, you heard me. The PC's get to kill the last troll, who has 2 heads, and 3 arms by the way. Some kinda magical mutant. Anyways, after dispatching him, they fight the defiler in the ruins, where they discover a massive repository of magical texts, rods, and other items. However, the ensuing magic battle causes the ruins to sink into the muck to be lost forever. Needs some reworking, especially the treasure part, as clever PC's can grab an armful of loot before it disappears under the mud. They even threw the Defiler Metamorphosis spell in with the ruins in case any Defiler PC's wanna change into a dragon later on |
