Holy Symbols

In my gaming session the other night the groups cleric of Paladine lost his holy symbol and set out to make a new one. So far so good, but I have always read in the novels that Paladine's holy symbol was a platinum triangle. When I told him he would have to get platinum to make it from he became incensed and told me that I was *$%@ing him over for no reason. When I asked him to explain this he quoted the tools section of the book, which I don't believe I’m allowed to quote here but on P 190 states something to the effect that wooden holy symbols are no less effective than silver ones. Now I take this to mean that if your god allows you to use any material you are not penalized for using the wooden rather than the silver, but he took it to mean that gods didn't care what material their symbols were made from and he could just use wood and ignore the platinum.

So what do you guys think? Did I have my head up my -censored- as he said, or is he just reading way to much into the wooden holy symbols description? If the latter, how much do you think is a reasonable cost for materials for a platinum holy symbol, considering a silver one is 25gp and weighs one pound and platinum is ten times more valuable than silver.

Thanks for your time and input.

Well...two things. (and because I don't know if there's an official answer on this, these are my personal opinions)

1) Yes, Paladine's holy symbol is a Platinum Triangle...and there for the priests Medallion of Faith is also made from platinum.

2) I don't think it's possible to "make a new Medallion of Faith." You must find a priest (any priest...of any alignment of any deity) and have them give you a new medallion. As is stated in numerous sources...it doesn't matter which deities are involved...the medallion that is created is always the medallion that is needed by the new priest.

So...I'd say your PC is SOL unless he can find a local true cleric. It'll be a good lesson..."Don't loose your Medallion of Faith!!"

I agree with brimstone. The Holy symbol would be a Platinum Triangle.

So the player has two options:
a: either buy enough platinum and make a new one
b: find a cleric (any cleric) who has a "Medallion of Faith" who can create a new symbol for your cleric

Actually, the two options are:

1) Find another cleric of Paladine who would use his Medallion of Faith to create another one.

2) Journey to the Statue of Paladine, which also creates Medallions of Faith. I don't have my book in front of me, but I'm almost positive that that was one of it's abilities.

These aren't just regular holy symbols, so you can't just make one. That's how I've always interpreted it by the information in all DL editions, including 3.5. If one of the writers refutes that, then I guess I would go along with it.. I'd just have a hard time imaging one could just be made by hand.

But it's your game, so if you want to let a character just make one, that's your call. But if you are going to allow him to make one, you aren't being unfair by making him use platinum.. particularly since you're already making an exception for allowing him to make one. So maybe you could bring that up if he starts griping about it again.

Nuke: I believe you're refering to the pine statue (Elves see the triangle as a pine tree rather than a simple triangle) in the Ghost Blade adventure in the back of the Dragonlance Campaign Setting.

And yes one of its abilities was the ability to create new Medalions of Faith.

Also DLCS trumps Players Handbook... in Dragonlance Medalions of faith are specific meterials based on the Deity.
