#1Shei-NadMay 18, 2004 15:24:05 | Well, I liked the pentad so far (as in, I found it ok), but I really don't like how the Sorcerer-Kings are played out in the last novel (as in, it sucks big time). Seems to me they'd have slaughtered Rikus before they even had time to think about doing it. Anyways. Anyways, there are a few interesting things to get from that book though: 1- Sorcerer Kings would seem to assume different ''Dragon'' shapes. Indeed, some would not even look dragon-like. According to Denning, one of the setting's authors, it would seem that the metamorphosis takes different shapes depending on the choices of the caster. Borys also backs this up in the Amber Enchateress by telling Tithian that Kalak chose to adopt a form after him, but could have chosen another form. That brings up an interesting metamorphosis situation, where dragonhood is not the only way to go. Though it diverges from the mechanics, its still interesting to have the lion-creature Hamanu, the avian Tec, etc. I think, however, that those could be blended into the dragon metamorphosis as different dragon appearances, much like Nibenay from the core art looks nothing like borys, though both a dragon-like. I think I'll go this way. 2- Borys seems unable, or unwilling, to use magic while he has his obsidian orbs, and Sadira suggests he must refrain from doing so in order to maintain Rajaat's prison. He's still free to use psionics though, but that can be an interesting twist to the character. 3- I find it unlikely that the Dragon from the book has wings, since he seems to have two ways of moving around: Walking and ''fading into the distance''. There is only one passage though, at the start of a chapter, that says that Rkard and the Dragon ''had stopped flying'', which suggests the dragon had flown, but that could just as easily have been the result of his psionics. In fact, the Dragon never takes flight anywhere else in the books, including at least two occasions where he is evading combat by walking away. Finally, wings aren't described anywhere, in any pentad books. I'm more convinced than before that the dragon did not have wings. |
