Hullo, to clarrify, I'm new to Dark Sun not to DMing .

Basicly I was planning on running a brief camapaign for some friends now that I'm home for the summer, and I saw the Dark Sun info in may's Dragon and really liked it. So far I've picked up that and May's Dungeon as well.

I also recall, I think it was the January issue? that had some rules for how defiling and preserving works in the 3.5 system. I don't know for sure If any players will want to play preservers (they better not want to play defilers! *shakes fist*) but if anyone had like-a brief run down of how it works in 3.5 to tide me over till I get that issue... that would rule.

Shoopa.

So. Any advice for diving face first into Arthas?

ooh, I'll just sit back and let Xlorep rampage on Pazio's Dark Sun... :D

In the mean time, glad to see you're interested in Dark Sun. Dragon 315's rules are somewhat complex for defiling, so there not easily summed up here, at least not in a legal way. You'd need to pick up the issue, and then apply some modification presented on this board (the basic system is broken, madly)

And as you'll surely hear at least 70 times in the following days, you should checks out Athas.org, the official site of Dark Sun after TSR went down. They have a full conversion of Dark Sun, which is much more complete than the Dragon/Dungeon one. Also, it is UNANIMOUSLY acclaimed by the dark sun fans here as MUCH better than that conversion in respect of what Dark Sun is (was).

Anyways, you'll get more details on that later, I bet

Welcome, salutations, and all of that stuff. Glad to see another Dark Sun convert join the fold. what I'm about to say isn't a personal assault on you or your gaming group, however I do tend to get rabid about Paizo's Bizarro Dark Sun, but I'll get to that.

If you liked the Dark sun released in those magazines, you really should check out something that is a bit closer to the actual gaming world. There's so many things wrong with the version released in Dragon and Dungeon, and I'm getting tired of reiterating the problems, especially to every newbie who shows up. But basically - I hate it. As does most of the people who have ever even seen the 2nd Edition Dark Sun game materials or the novels. They butchered the setting, I guess in a horrible effort to make it appeal to those that are more "mainstream", but it did almost everything wrong. Note I said almost - there's a couple things they did ok with. Like advancing the timeline 300 years. And attempting to get Sorcerer-Kings back into each of the main cities. Those were cool ideas. The rest of it almost completely contradicts the rest of Dark Sun, more than the Dark Sun materials contradict each other.

Anyway, I'd strongly suggest checking out the rules released by Athas.org. That's been a fan-based, officially approved by Wizards of the Coast, conversion of the 2e rules across to 3e and now 3.5e. There has been a lot, and I do mean a lot of hard work put into that conversion, which includes the core rules, monsters can be found in Terrors of Athas and Terrors of the Dead Lands, and there's more released there. For filler/flavor text, I'd recommend checking out getting ahold of the PDF files for Dark Sun, which can be bought from SVGames. they are still working on releasing more for it. There's also Mike's Website which has many of the images that will be included in both the Core Rules and Terrors of Athas materials from athas.org. They are rather imressive and well done. For a list of links to different Dark Sun sites that is kept up-to-date by the site owner (almost religiously, he needs some sort of therapy for this... I'm certian it's not healthy), there's the the Silt Skimmer. On there, you'll find a list of many sites with all kinds of Dark Sun rules and information.

That's actually not too bad of a defiler concept they presented there. However, there's another version on athas.org, which I personally prefer. The benefits a Defiler gets are more subtle at athas.org, but still quite impressive, and I think well-thought out.

Doopa?

Well, Arthas is, last I checked, the new Lich King for the Warcraft universe. Athas, however, is the world of Dark Sun
