#2heretic_apostateMay 23, 2004 9:30:49 | One of the sorceror-kings (queens?) was sucked into Ravenloft: Kalid-Ma. He/She (the gender is confused between settings) left seven orbs in Athas (in the athas book of artifacts, whatever it's called). In Ravenloft, he/she is asleep, and their high templar is the one who is the "dread power" of the realm. |
#3xlorepdarkhelm_dupMay 23, 2004 9:55:47 | Coulda sworn there were 5 orbs, guess I gotta crack out my Psionic Artifacts of Athas and check... But yea, the Island of Kalidnay from 2e Ravenloft is the place. It was summarily removed when Sword & Sorcerey Studiios took over the publication of Ravenloft when it was made for 3e rules. |
#4heretic_apostateMay 23, 2004 12:59:44 | Five, seven, whatever. The main idea is, the orbs are still on Athas, where they might serve to draw back Kalid-Ma. Of course, given that Arthaus is publishing Ravenloft, they can't put in non-core domains, so the Athasian domain is gone from Ravenloft--as well as some others, like probably Lord Soth's domain. |
#5kilamarMay 23, 2004 14:26:23 | As far as I know Kalid-Ma is still on Athas, in a way. The ruler of the former domain in Ravenloft is one of his templars. Kalid-Ma is not there. Kilamar |

It hadn't been for a while, but what is this, the 4th or 5th post within 2 weeks? And for the record - in the Ravenloft books, Kalid-Ma is definitely there. comatose and in human form in a crypt while the High Templar rules, but he's there all the same. |
#8the_people_dupMay 24, 2004 4:33:04 | Umm, eep. Thankyou for the explenation (I'm still procesing the information). Can't think to hard on it though, I'm ment to be doing a chemistry essay. grrr… |
#9zombiegleemaxMay 24, 2004 11:28:15 | Of course, given that Arthaus is publishing Ravenloft, they can't put in non-core domains, so the Athasian domain is gone from Ravenloft--as well as some others, like probably Lord Soth's domain. [/b] Actually, they have only removed Kalidnay. Sithicus, which used to be Soth's domain, is still there. The last novel of the line, Specter of the Black Rose detailed Soth's return to Krynn. Sithicus has a new lord. |
#10xlorepdarkhelm_dupMay 24, 2004 11:43:22 | Originally posted by adventureauthor Actually, there's about a half dozen or so "duchies" that have been surgically removed. Yes, sithicus is there - however all reference to the name "Lord Soth" have been removed, and he doesn't exist there any more - instead they refer to him as an "undead blackguard". Kalidnay is but 1 of several that were completely removed - probably because the rules regarding it would be hard for S&SS to duplicate without stepping on Athas.org's toes, or with their agreement with WotC. |
#11zombiegleemaxMay 24, 2004 12:29:32 | Originally posted by xlorepdarkhelm Actually, Soth was removed because Hickman and Weis wanted him back in the Dragonlance line. As for what other domains were cut out, which ones are they? The list that I have in my Secrets of the Dread Realms includes all of them that I can remember but Kalidnay and the Nightmare Lands. I may be remembering incorrectly, though. |
#12SysaneMay 24, 2004 12:47:40 | Kalidnay and the whole Ravenloft connection was kind of cheesey from the start. It would be cooler if it disappeared due to some kind of failed magical ritual (i.e. dragon metamorphsis) rather than wisked off by the mists of the Demi-plane of Dread (which may or may not have been the original reason why it is the state it currently in. I can't remember). I'm thinking of having it return. Phasing back into exsistance on Athas for a short while only to dissapear again for a century or so. I'm trying to fleshing out the details. --Sysane, The Terror of Urik |

#14xlorepdarkhelm_dupMay 24, 2004 13:09:09 | Originally posted by adventureauthor Now I gota dig up my Ravenloft stuff. I know when it came out, I looked in the book, compared it to the 2e material (that was set after the grand convergence or whatever it was called), and there was like 5 or 6 realms removed. And yes, I know Weis and hickman wanted Soth back, but then they also killed him off within about 4 paragraphs in that novel. It also is true that the different world licenses didn't permit mixing when WotC handed them out - which is the primary reason that the darklords that were from other worlds, and even a few of the duchies, got the axe. Others got the axe because they were underdeveloped or felt inadiquite, and they really aren't missed. Personally, I like the idea of Kalidnay being in Ravenloft, and would love to see a project rise where it details the island of Kalidnay - even if there's no mention of the rest of Ravenloft - it could be surrounded by a silt sea and then the mists around that on all borders... |
